Why isn't there much discussion of S&W 1911's

Good question. Perhaps not many forum members own one. With so many people making 1911s now choosing one can be a daunting task. To me a 1911 previously had to be a Colt, others were just copies. S&W changed that perception with their "E" Series, besides being beautiful pistols they are just as good quality as any out there. I have friends with several high end 1911s like Ed Brown, Nighthawk, Les Baer and Kimbers. Non of them shoot better or more accurately than my E series, but all cost a lot more.

I have the 1911 Pro and have posted in response to several inquires, but how often can you say "Everything about it suits my shooting and it works perfectly, right out of the box. Buy one!"

For the people who crave to buy cheap and endlessly "improve" I guess it is too boringly reliable.

I bought a SW 1911 target model (108284) a few years ago and it's a keeper. 100% reliable, so no need to discuss, except to brag. I would definitely buy an E Series if I didn't already have this one.

Your are correct about peoples attitude on the external extractor but what sometimes is ignored is the fact that Browning's later designs used external extractors...he was not opposed to them. I agree on the E series being a great 1911. I have a "pre" E series that shoots just as well but I really like the elimination of the firing pin block in the E series...makes cleaning much easier!

As for no much posting on the 1911? Not sure...everyone has at least one, right?

I have several 1911 style pistols from Colt, Para, Taurus and S&W, both in full size and Commander size models and chambered in .40 S&W, 10mm and .45 ACP . With the exception of a NIB Colt Lightweight Stainless Commander XSE that I just recently bought from a widowed neighbor all the others have been tweaked and changed somewhat.

However, my favorite is my PC1911 (#170261), the only thing I changed was the addition of a Dawson FO front sight for IDPA use. (This picture taken when I first purchased it before I changed the front sight.)

I have shot thousands of rounds through it in practice and IDPA matches (before a table saw mishap enabled me to count in fractions) and it has had very few hiccups.
I have two Gold Cups (a .45 ACP and a 10mm) and it is more accurate than either of them.

I am looking at getting a new E-Series #108482 to replace the Taurus PT1911SS for general winter (heavy clothing) carry. However, I can't seem to figure out why the standard SW1911 #108282 has a retail of $100 more. Seems to me it wold be the other way.


Anyone familiar with both of them and know the difference?

I agree. I think the same thing can also be said about Sig Sauer 1911 pistols.

Excellent question! My 108295 has an MSRP over $300 higher than the E series 108495! I love my 295 but not sure why they tag it so high.

I bought a sw1911 too a few years ago with target sights. Never had a problem with it. I love it.

I couldn't let this well deserved thread go by without adding my vote for the most excellent SW1911s. Here's my pride 'n joy:

I love the looks of justicetyme's PC, but just couldn't swing the $$$, and so settled for the SW1911 Pro (above) which has been an incredible pistol.

I recently bought a S&W 1911 SC E Series Bobtail and love the gun. Took it to the range today for the first time and it ran perfect and is accurate.

You can't own too many 1911's. So far I have a Para and a Taurus. I love to shoot both. The S&W's are sweet but I'm currently on an AR-15 kick. So many guns, so little time.

like Roc doc I too own a S&W 1911 tagetl (108284). I'm left handed so the amphibious safety is a must, but I really like the Novack fixed sights better on this pistol. If I didn't have it, I think I'd go with the Ruger and add a ambi safety. Sorry.

I am jealous!!! I finally got my hands on a 1911 SC E series bobtail, and it will definitely be in my collection in the future. The gun has near perfect balance.
