I'm thinking about trading into one of these. It's not a billboard, just a plain Jane SS S&W 1911. Does anyone here have any strong feelings one way or the other about these? I have a couple of Colts, but this would be my first S&W 1911.

Depends what a person is hung up on. If you want a well made reliable 1911 then there are plenty of choices and S&W makes a good one. I have two and they are 100%. My son in law has a Ruger and it's also 100%.

Some folks won't buy a series 80 or have a full length guide rod or anything with serrations on the front of the slide or an external extractor,ect...that's all fine and people should buy what appeals to them. These things don't make any of them better or worse...just a bit different. My answer to those who would argue that anything not a pony is a "clone" and will only own a pony that's just fine with me...own what suits you.

I have not had issue one with either of my Smith 1911's and both are better shooters than me. :) You'll get plenty more on this subject!;)

It's a lot gun for the money and would last you a life time. All stainless 1911 with 5 inch barrel. What's not to love. Best of luck and be sure to post some pics of your new toy.

1911's are one of those pistols that owners have a kazillion different opinions of. Anything mechanical can, and eventually will break so customer service is important.
Usually the more you spend the more accurate pistol you get. So much just depends on what you will use it for and what are your expectations.
Carry piece? Target practice? House protection?

It would help if you told this group what you want the pistol for.

Everyone is going to have a different opinion. I rather have a sw over a colt any day. But i also think kimbers are the most highly over rated 1911 made.unless your getting into a les baer or maybe a wilson combat then i find most 1911's to be mostly the same.

i have 3 sw 1911's. 2 pd and a performance center. I wouldn't trade them for anything less then a les baer or higher.

I have an early billboard sw1911. I read on this forum that they may have had performance center involvement, don't know if that is true. What I do know and it surprised me, it is as accurate at 50 yards as my 5" 945 that I used for bullseye. It did have reliability (stovepipe) issues that required a trip back to the factory. Perhaps it was a little too tight? Bottom line, I like it!

What I'd really like is a Commander length PD. So far, no one has offered to trade one for my Sig 220Carry SAO, which is about as close to a 1911 as possible without being one.

For the money... the S&W is as good as any of them... here's my latest E series I just had cerakoted desert tan.... sorry for the poor picture, seems my new cam files are too big for this board..

My love affair with 1911s ended around 2 years ago. I had two tricked out Norincos that were superior in every way but I dumped them for some other toys, including a Hi-Power so I didn't stray too, too far away. If I was going back to 1911s I'd have to look at S&W first, just because that's where my heart lies when it comes to handguns as a general rule, and I've handled them and they are excellent replicas. Presently, the only 1911 I covet is my friend's .38 Super so, again, I stray but not too far from the original. I think you'd be well served with a S&W 1911 but I am so far away from being a purist about those guns that issues such as Series 80, guide rod length, serrations on the front of the slide, external extractors, etc., are just of no consequence to me. It depends on whether you're a shooter or a collector from the outset - and then the tiny technicalities might start to matter for various reasons. But I agree for sure on one item above - Kimbers are over rated. They're excellent but, well, so are EVER SO MANY!

I haven't carried it yet, I have carried my other 1911's... have to get this one to the range, then we'll see about carrying. I have a couple of Crossbreed holsters, IWB-OWB... love em..

I have a S&W 1911SC E Series and it is on par or better then my other 1911s (Sig, Para, Kimber). The only thing I have shot that outshines my Smith is a Les Baer.

I have been keeping my eyes open for an earlier smith (billboard or the one you are looking at). Some of the guys I shoot with have them and they are really nice 1911s. My advice is too grab it if the price is less than a current e-series S&W 1911.
