S&W 1940's M&P serial number

Seeking advice.
Looking at a M&P 38SW Special with 2" barrel in excellent (really nice) condition. Serial number is S 9657XX.
Wondering what year this gun might be and a fair price. No box.

Welcome to posting! That sounds to be a $600-650 gun depending on its exact condition. Jack (JP@AK) is the local M & P expert and should be along shortly.

Mine, SN S 925735 shipped in September 1947.

M&P 38SW Special with 2" barrel

Serial number is S 9657XX.

Most likely shipped in January, 1948. I show one in that range that shipped on December 19, 1947.

There was a large run of 2" square butt units in that serial range. Most of them left Springfield in January, 1948. Two of them are within one hundred numbers from yours (S9658xx).

2" barrel is a plus, original clean grips are a plus, if it is really clean and tight, $750 would not be terrible if you really like it.


@ $900 + tax I'd want a mint example in the original box, there were a lot of M&Ps made and another one will come along! (right after you buy this one! )
