I had a 1st model single shot 1891 with the recoil shield serial #22657 and need to know if it falls into the antique range when it was made. This is very important to me as it is a
hold up in my ATF compliance inspection going on right now. I was told by the person I sold it to that I did not need an FFL to ship it. This was done 6 years ago and just now has come back to haunt me. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Gary M.

You might want to give S&W Factory a call on Monday, they usually put you through to Mr. Jinks on older guns. He should be able to tell you for sure.

Gary, Your gun is probably going to show shipping post 1899 in the S&W records, which is what the BATF usually uses to determine antique or not. For example, Ser. # 21728 was shipped in August 1903. Yours is a higher number, although guns were not shipped in serial number order. Around the turn of the century, S&W had a lot of frames on hand that did not get assembled into guns for many years. The Model 1880 .44 DAs frames were all made prior to 1899 but many did not get assembled and shipped for up to 15 years, thereofre the BATF accepts all .44DA as antiques, regardless of shipping dates. When you talk to Roy Jinks, ask him if your frame could have been made and in inventory prior to 1899 even if the shipping date is later. Ed.
