Just acquired a 22/32 Heavy Frame Target (1923 model). Is it safe to use any load/velocity .22 ammo or should I stick to only Standard Velocity loads? I was not sure if it mattered, given the gun's age. Prefer to be safe than sorry. Thanks! Pic attached.

The 22/32 HST did not get the recessed cylinder until about 1935, I would stick with standard velocity rounds. Mine is from 1916, and that is what I shoot.

Any 22 ammo will be safe for the gun but not for others in close proximity.

So the recessed chambers were introduced after 22 LR Hi Vel ammo. It seems the HV case heads were known to rupture unless supported by the recess.

I agree. Look at the thickness of the cylinder walls and barrel diameter compared to bore diameter. I think it can be safely said that a 22 barrel or cylinder has never failed. Regarding the case head, I've never seen one rupture, but my experience is mostly shooting 22 rifles.

The cause of ruptured .22 Long Rifle case rims is reputed to be an increase in the amount/effectiveness of propellant accompanied by the continued use of comparatively low grade brass for the case. It is said this cause was determined early on, and corrected promptly via the use of higher quality/strength material for the cartridge case.

The development and subsequent use of recessed chambers continued on----as a solution in search of a problem.

Thanks for the feedback on the ammo. I will stick to Standard Velocity .22 only. Looking forward to shooting this old S&W. The frame size and grip stance just made it a "must have". Timing is excellent; finish is a bit challenged, which makes it an excellent shooter grade piece. Appreciate the help.

They are a kick to shoot. Very accurate too. Standard ammo only and you will be very happy with your revolver as I am with mine. Big Larry
