S&W 26-2 1964 vintage

Oh man, a 26 would be my dream gun.

I won't call it Grail because the only way I'll ever afford one is to win the lottery, which will be hard since I don't play.

An interesting point-
The word MODEL is fully spelled.
I don't recall ever seeing that.
I am used to seeing MOD or MOD. with the period.
Has anyone else got a revolver with MODEL stamped in it?

Could you take the cyl and yoke out of the gun and get a good closeup of the frame stamping?
It might show something your eye doesn't see.

Even if it is an overstamp, we still won't know because we know the Factory has overstamped model numbers many times.

The gun demands a letter!

Totally Agreed on the LEtter.

Re: 'MODEL' being spelled out in full, I am looking at the SCSW on my Ipad, and it says regarding the model 26 (no dash):

"Early Production as a six-groove backstrap and forestrap later changed to 10-groove. Blued finish marked '.45 CAL MODEL 1950' , 6-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.53", 1/10" or 1/8" Patridge front Sight with micrometer click rear sight."

So we definitely need a letter on this.

Question for you, what would you value a nice 26-2 at?

You are talking about the barrel marking.
I am talking about the frame marking in the yoke cut behind the yoke shown in the pic below.

How much you got? :D:D:D

ETA-
forgot the pic!
Now attached..

I think the "MODEL" stamped refers to the barrel. The fact it is spelled out on the yoke recess suggests to me it is a one-off, special order. Or a fake ;).

I bid on this gun but stopped because of the "MODEL" marking in the yoke. I had never seen that and it raised a flag.

I hope it turns out to be legitimate.

My bet is this gun was assembled for someone who had a spare Model of 1950 barrel. Seems to me that the factory may well have done it for a 'special' person request. It is a three screw gun, right. Are the threads on the extractor right or left hand?

I would not be surprised if it doesn't letter even if it was built as a one-off favor for someone.

You could probably call Roy and talk it over. He's been known to advise someone if a gun won't letter.

Good Luck!

"MODEL" spelled out in the yoke is weird and the diamond stamped on the inside of the barrel shroud is curious also.

The threads are right hand.
I have a 3 screw 25-2 with right hand threads.....it was shipped in 63

I call fake. Put together with the intention to deceive. No 26-2 was ever produced. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. I would be really impressed if it was a stamped model 26, no dash. I believe they are rarer than my model of 1950 (pre-26).

I'm not claiming it's a "real" 26-2, but consider, it is a 3-screw frame, and wouldn't ALL 3-screw frames have a model designation stamped in the yoke area along with the serial # (being post-1957, unlike older 5 screw pre-model frames)? If so, there is no evidence of someone removing a "MOD 28-2" (or the like) designation, to restamp "26-2". I don't believe one could effectively remove a model stamp without taking the metal down too far, so as to cause a "gap" between frame & yoke with the cylinder closed. There is no evidence of this. I will definitely get a letter on it one day, and if it's not a "real" 26-2, then I will enjoy it as I intended to in the first place, as a model of 1950 .45ACP. Heck, I'm into it under a grand anyhow.
