Hello everyone, I just made the acquisition of a beautiful Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 6 "1 / 2, it is 98% new, it was my book with its wooden box and documents, n Serial number is N122200, I would like to know if it is normal that the serial number is recorded in the cylender and the extractor, waiting for your answers, I thank you in advance, cordially Gaëtan

Gaetan - where are your pictures??:)

Many times when a revolver goes back to S&W for refinish or barrel change, etc. they will stamp the serial number on the cylinder and in the ejector shroud of the barrel. That way when the gun is reinstalled, they have all the correct components.
Have you looked under the grips for any Factory marks/stamps?

Gaëtan - thanks for the pictures - NICE GUN!

The placement of those stampings of the serial number on the cylinder and ejector star are normal......I've seen it on a few of my guns. It doesn't look like it ever went back to Factory.

Happy shooting!

Your gun looks like it was serialized in '1971, but only a ship date from Mr. Jinks or a factory letter will tell for sure when it shipped from the factory, and to where.

94115 is an assembly number, and is normal. The G6 may be an import mark or govn't proof mark, as is the one on the rear face of the cylinder.

Isn't it strange that the SN on the cylinder seems to be preceded by a "M" rather than a "N" ? Or my eyes are a bit tired ? Do you think this really could be a S&W marking ?

Philblack...It is an M, but S&W is known for not paying attention to detail when stamping parts. It is a factory stamping.

Bill

Thanx Bill ;) But while you're calling it "not paying attention", I'm calling it couldn't-give-a-damn sort of attitude :D

Now, now, Philblack! Maybe the man's N stamp flew off somewhere (as they sometimes do when you give them a whack) and he didn't have time to look for it before the cylinders went off to heat treat!

I can assure you, once those devils go into orbit, you can sometimes spend a while looking for them. :D

I'm sure you're right ! It's just that our police, here, doesn't know anything about guns most of the time, and in case of control that could be difficult to explain

Um, we really would like to see some pics of your 29-2.:D

You obviously have the photog thing down. Very nice pics, and a darn nice gun!
I will say this- I believe that yout trigger has been replaced at some point in its past. The side plate shows eveidence that it has been off right below the hammer/sight area, and the trigger you have is an older style from the '60's. I say that because the older triggers were noticably thinner at the tip than the later ones were, and they also have slightly more curve to them.

I own several of both style, and all of the thinner ones came on '60's and earlier guns.

Here is a picture of them side by side. The gun is a 25-2 from 1980. The trigger is from an early '60's gun. You can clearly see the difference here-

All of my N frames including the 29's that were made since '69 have the thicker trigger.

The very upper edge of the side plate at the top just below and behind the sight shows light rolling of the edge, which is why I said that I believe that the sideplate has been off. :)

Also, take a close look at your photo of the right side of the front sight. That pin should be polished flush ( as they all were before the gun was blued), so that along with the fact that there is a slight peening of the front/top edge of the sight blade tells me that the sight was most likely replaced somewhere along the way too.

I am not trying to rain on your parade, just pointing out things I noticed in your excellent photo's. You have a darn nice gun, and I would be proud to own it!

Beautiful gun, beautiful grips, outstanding pictures. Thank you for posting them for us. The 29 with 6-1/2" barrel is, in my view, the most aesthetically pleasing revolver ever made by Smith or any other company. I should have waited to find one of those a few years ago instead of buying one with the 8-3/8" barrel(can't afford both). Mine is nice, just not the nicest.
