I picked up an unfired NIB engraved 29-10 over the weekend and was wondering about the engraving. Someone said it is machined now and not hand engraved but I messaged S&W over the weekend to find out the exact year of manufacture for this specific serial number, which is 2023, and they told me that some are machine engraved and some are hand engraved, but she would not be able to tell me which one mine was. Any way, to really know? Does it really matter in value? I just like to understand the specifics about my firearms. Thanks for the help!

Your revolver is machine engraved

Today's machine engraving is quite attractive, but not a contender when put up against hand engraving

This is not so great a picture, but this is the 75th Anniversary 357 Magnum that the Factory produced. The second is a better picture of the Texas Hold'Em Model 36

Here are a few examples of hand engraving. The first is a commemorative with Class "D" coverage whole the second is a Class "A" hand engraved revolver and the 3rd is the introduction of the Model 649 which is master + engraved at the Factory

I consider hand engraving more attractive and more valuable

The Factory's machine engraving allows some nicely embellished firearms to be owned by a much larger segment of the shooting community

A quick look at the 29-10 guns for sale show just about the same price for engraved as not engraved which surely indicates machine engraving. A hand engraved gun will cost more and will be much more valuable. Especially if it is an older non IL model.

Machine engraved Q&A

I recently purchased a 4" blued model 29 with machine engraving and some of the engraving will actually cut your finger if you run your hand across it. It's as if it missed a stage of clean up before it was blued. A bit disappointed with it. Is this something I should contact S&W about?
