I was recently given a S7W 32 Long 2' revolver in nickel. The serial number is 655127. on the inside of the frame where the cylinder swings out are the numbers 29129. it has some plastic fake horn grips but over all it is in what I would consider 80 percent. Any body have any information for me. I looks like the same gun that my father in law carried as the deputy chief of Duchess County Sheriff's Office in New York.

I can’t give you a manufacturing date but someone will be along that can get you close.

A few months ago I picked up a 98-99% 30-1 32 S&W Long J frame. If yours has a round butt it’s a model 30 or 30-1 or a 31 or 31-1 if the butt is square. They’re on the same J frame size as the 33 Terrier which is in 38 S&W caliber, not to be confused with 38 S&W special which is a model 36 which is called a chiefs special. All are steel frames with some in blue and some in nickel. There are stainless variations and airweight variations with and without exposed hammers.

As far as value, that depends on where Route selling it. I paid $600 for mine which is a good deal where I live particularly for a mint gun. I’ve seen others I’d call 90% go for upper $500 to ones with a broken hammer spur for $325. If yours is 80% I’d guess around here it’d bring $450-475.
They’re really great little guns and very low recoil when shooting. Also the 32 S&W long cartridge is inherently accurate.

Others can tell you more specific information.

I traded a friend my mint nickel model 37 for an unfired 1953 Colt Cobra. That started my interest in 32 cal and added the model 30 and currently in looking for another Smith or Colt in 32 S&W Long with a longer barrel.

Take it out and shoot it, you’ll really enjoy it.

Probably mid 1950's...but before 1958

Welcome to the Forum from Virginia.

S&W started stamping Model no's in the yoke area in 1958 so your gun is earlier than that probably. The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition lists 32 Long revolvers with serial numbers 536685 as 1946 to s/n 712953 in 1960. Sorry...but that is a wide range covering 14 years. You would need to send for a Letter from the SWHF (Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation) to find out exactly when and where your revolver shipped.

As to value, I have seen them go for $400 to $750 around here, of course depending upon condition and whether any accessories were included (box, documents, tools, etc.).

My Model 31-1 shipped in September 1975 and was purchased at a local gun store in October 1975. I bought it at an estate sale after the original owner passed. The gun was unfired, the heirs never even knew the woman owned a gun, and in the box with the gun and documents was the original sales receipt.

The local gun store is now a physical Interstate highway exit ramp!!:D

I would say that your gun with fake plastic grips and average condition with slight bluing wear on high spots, but otherwise good mechanical condition would be in the $400 to $450 range.

Post some pictures if you can. We love pics and if you are interested in selling, there is no better place than this Forum, Guns for Sale sub-forum. You will get a fair price for sure.

Good luck with your gun.
