S&W 38 safety hammerless ??

I found a 38 safety hammerless 4th change yesterday at a pawn shop. I took it to the range today and after the 4th round the trigger guard came loose and luckily the little v spring fell in my hand and not in the grass. I've tried to reinstall without any luck. Any advice with installing is greatly appreciated.

Hello Mark, are you dead set convinced that this is your go to shooter?
The TG is a big spring. No advice here about a fix. Why bother? Best

Not sure if this helps you out but it just so happened I had my Dave Chicoine "Gunsmithing guns of the old west" book out and Dave has a chapter on the 38 safety on page 279. Sorry about the crude pics but best I can do with a phone cam at the moment.

It sounds like the trigger guard has been forced together too many times by someone who didn't know how to take it off properly or the guard is worn underneath the lip that holds it to the frame.
If you feel brave enough and can get it back together you can try spreading the guard back out a little to give it a tight fit. Or you can try a dab of blue locktight to hold it in place.
