One LGS has a 4043 in the case for $379.

Another has a Sig P226 in 40 for $549.
Some flexibility for each, but not a lot.

So, which one?

I know the Smith is DAO but that's not a problem.
Both are similar in terms of condition.
Either would be for range use and/or beside gun. (If I wanted to "invest" in either I could send the Smith down to BMCM for a workover or change to DA/SA; the Sig would go to Sig for their rehab deal and add night sights. I could also invest in a new barrel [$240 from BarSto] and a new recoil spring and I'd have a 9mm Sig as well.)

Sig has all the glamour, I have a ton of Smiths and love the dearly. Sig will probably hold its value, I think the Smith is a bargain at that price (Yes? No?).
Price says, "Buy the S&W." But there's that little nag, "But it's a SIG!"

I'm conflicted, and no I can't afford to buy both before someone suggests that!

Wadda ya think?

4043, hands down. The S&W 3rd Gen Semiautomatic Pistols are grossly underrated, but their prices have been on the rise since folks have begun to discover what hidden gems they are via cheap police trade-ins.

I have a 4043. Very happy with it.

Plus I'm a southpaw, and SIG 226/228/229's are not lefty friendly with the decock lever.

Agree with F.S&W. I always thought that the S&W 3rd Generation pistols were "inferior " to the Glocks and SIGs BITD because that's what the "experts " said. That and the backlash S&W got from the gun community for working with the Clinton administration.

In 2019 I had zero S&W 3rd Generation pistols.

Today I have 11.

Get the 4043, you won't be disappointed.

JMHO YMMV

ADDENDUM: Use the difference to buy mags and ammo. The 40xx 11rd mags are fairly cheap compared to some 3rd Generation mags.

I happen to own both. And I like both. As you said about the 4043, "I know the Smith is DAO but that's not a problem." I agree, and actually, I prefer DAO for personal defense purposes.

The SIG is "bulkier" and S/A trigger better for longer range "aimed fire." No doubt. If I were looking for a range toy, the SIG would win. If I actually wanted to carry either, or, on my belt CCW, the 4043 wins.

Personally, I have way more 3rd gen S&Ws than SIGs. There's a reason for that...

But, since you have a "ton" of S&Ws, if you don't have a P226, you should...

As much as I like Smiths, I'd get the SiG for a working gun. Then I'd get conversion barrels in 357sig and 9mm. Factory 357sig barrels aren't that expensive and there's a lot of aftermarket support. If you're a collector, get the Smith.

The SIG locks up, steel on steel - so if you are going to shoot it much, I’d get the SIG. The S&W’s chew up the aluminum frames too much to suit me. But, like it was suggested above get both! Run up that credit card for a couple of months!

Just a note about which gun: I got the Sig. 4 mags. Good price. Just got a 220 in .45 back from Sig and wow, did they do a nice job on it (had them work on the trigger.)
Of course, that S&W is gonna sit in that LGS case for weeks and weeks. So I may end up with....yeah, I'm weak.
