Do you think it’s a top break. Not a tip up? I don’t think tip ups were ever 44s. 32 or 22 caliber

Welcome to the Forum. The reason why we need additional information is that there are several models in 44 caliber that each start with serial number "1". The Model 3, 44 American, 1st Model, three different Model 3, 44 Russians, New Model 3 in 44 rimfire, 44 American, and 44 Russian, 44 Double Action, 1st Model in 44 Russian and 44-40 and a few more. All these models would have a serial number 881.

You have an early .44 Double Action, made from 1881 and sold until 1913 but classified as an antique gun. Numrich and Jack First may have parts but you can try posting a Wanted to Buy ad here too. Good luck in your search.
You need to determine what caliber you have, considering that the 44 DA was available in 44 Russian and 44-40 Winchester (Frontier Model). Both these models had a serial number 881. The 44-40 was called the Frontier and had a 1 9/16" cylinder along with serial number range from 1 to 15,340. If you have that cylinder length, you are looking at a 44 Double Action Frontier.
Let me also make a few remarks on parts for this model. I hate to say this, but think it will be very difficult to put that revolver back into service ever again. It was obviously used as a parts gun for some other 44 DA and those parts you need will be difficult to find and expensive. Even if you find the parts, the cost may come near the price of a working example out there for sale.
If the gun has no sentimental value, I would part it out on ebay and buy another working 44 DA for your collection. I think you would do very well selling that gun a piece at a time.

"I think this needs a hammer & hand and spring?" The hand and spring are there. Check eBay for the hammer as they show up occasionally. Also check Gunbroker, etc. It may take time to find the part. Be patient.

I agree that the only missing part seems to be the hammer. Even the stirrup seems to be along with the mainspring in that plastic bag.
I don´t know how hard finding a hammer can be; but once obtained, some fitting might be necessary. I would certainly keep it until a replacement part shows up.
p.s.
I don´t know about the rear sear either. I cannot see it from pictures. Pin seems to be in place though.

The rear sear is barely visible in pix #2. Whether or not the sear is good is another question.
