I was in my local gun shop yesterday, and they had a used 4516 in the case. The slide had a number of scratches on one side (I assume holster wear?) but otherwise appeared to be in good shape. The slide action was silky smooth, and the trigger was perhaps the best I've ever felt in DA/SA. They have it priced at $399.

Is it worth it? I don't like to buy used guns, usually. For one thing, you don't know how they have been maintained. Sometimes, parts are hard to find. I don't know the age range of this pistol, or if S&W would still work on it (at cost.) However, it might fill a role I have been considering: a "truck gun." I had been thinking about a smaller auto...the price and caliber are certainly interesting, but not if it is going to be a problem.

Your thoughts?

If the scratches are in the side of the slide in the brushed stainless portion they are easy to get rid of with some scotch brite pads. $399 is a very good deal for a 4516 in the condition you describe.

It sounds like a good deal to me. The 4516 is a great pistol. I only sold mine because I'm not a .45 guy.

Not a bad deal if decent mechanically. Can also be easily comverted to 10mm.

That's a good price for a 4516.
As long as the scratches are not very deep it would be fairly low cost to have a slide refinished.

This 4516-2 the previous owner tried to hand polish the slide. Probably trying to clean up some holster wear. For now I just put a satin finish on the slide. Eventually I'll bead blast the slide, for now she is good enough. All she needed was new recoil & mag springs a good cleaning and she is good to go. The 45xx's are built like tanks. If the pistol is in good shape it's a fair price
