I recently purchased a 459 online and when I took it out to shoot it functioned fine but the double action trigger pull was atrocious. I have both a 5904 and a 5906 that have perfectly normal DA trigger pulls/weights so it’s not that I’m not used to DA, it really is extremely heavy and with a ton of stacking. If anyone that owns/shoots the 2nd gen guns has had this problem I’d appreciate any advice I can get, whether it’s changing springs or polishing specific surfaces, just need a starting point. Not hoping for world class at all, but right now this thing feels like it’s 18lbs at least.

In my opinion and with a little experience, I have found that there are four distinct levels of DA pull weight and smoothness across the 1-2-3rd Gens.

The best are the all MIM 3rd Gens, the latest production of all the guns.

Second place goes the 1st Gen guns where genuine craftsmen working for S&W had to fit the parts and ensure they worked. These guns also had no firing pin lock (so if your safety is off or ready to fire, these guns are not drop safe)

A close third place would be the pre-MIM 3rd Gens, where the parts were made to closer tolerances and most of them meshed very well together.

A distant last place is absolutely the 2nd Gens. The then-new firing pin lock and lack of attention to detail with parts fitting made these “crunchentickers” pretty good duty weapons but somewhat horrendous for any of us who love a sweet, smooth trigger.
