S&W 460 accuracy

I have read most of the threads i could find on this subject. I have the dies to reload but have not tried yet. With factory ammo i have gotten shotgun patterns at 50 yards. I shot a .454 casual for a few years so i don't think its too much gun. Because f the size and weight of this gun i think it kicks less. I have tried 45lc , 45lc Buffalo bore, .454 buffalo bore and .460 factory and Buffalo bore.
I wanted to kill a hog with this thing at like 150 yards but not the way its shooting so far! I just changed from a simmons scope to a Leupold with 4 mounting rings. I had 3 on simmons. I hope it settles the issue

Should do better than that. I don't have a 460, but with my 500 and a 2X Leopold I could keep them under 4" at 100 yds and the spread is more me than the gun I am sure.

I made a copy of a Ransom rest, that uses Ransom inserts, but have yet to try anything out with it.

I had gotten out of handgun hunting. I was "very" dissatisfied with my shooting at 100 yards. Old age has begun to affect my "sight acquisition"! I bought a Burris Fastfire Red Dot sight. That, quickly got me a comfortable 100 yard range, and with some practice....150 should be doable! I love my 460.....I just need to shoot more! As a side-note, I'm running 400 grain hard cast....pushed "pretty" hard!

I find it more pleasant (except for noise) to shoot, than my 629 with heavy cast Bullets (265 grain) pushed hard! memtb

Every 460 I have Ransom Rest tested shoot 5 rounds touching group at 25 yards. This includes 14", 12", 10.5", 7.5", 6", 3.5"; I have not tested the ES or V model but expect it will be similar.

The same 10.5" gun at 50 with a scope I shoot groups under 3" with 2.5x8 Leupold scope regardless of the factory ammo I have tried or my reloaded rounds.

It takes a lot of practice to shoot 460 well at distance.

45C has a 1/2" of free bore and is not going to produce suitable groups for hunting especially at distance. I have not shoot 454 ammo out of my guns but expect the 3/8" freebore to counter productive to accurate long distance accuracy in 460.


I shoot 4" groups at 100 hundreds but have friend who shoots the same gun and makes 2" group.

My observation is it is the shooter rather than the gun when it comes to accurcy with the 460.

I changed my scope from nikon to Luepold so hopefully that does the trick. there is no way that i am shooting terrible enough from a rest to miss the target completely at 50 yards. They shots are all over the place. I hope it was the scope time will telll ( range time)

My M460C is worthless with lead ...in anything but 460 brass.... empirically proven.
Jacketed 45 Long Colt run okay but are loaded for the Blackhawk and Winchester.

I will mount the 2.5-8x Leupold on it ...but only for long range target fun with proper scope friendly loads.

Odds are it is the scope or the mounts. My .460 is scary accurate, even when folks who have never shot a handgun before, shoot it.

Let us know how it does. Simmons scopes are notoriously cheap junk. The 460 probably ate it. I have had the best durability with Burris scopes on handguns, but Leupold is also a top brand.

I typically hunt unopened cans of diet soda at about 20 yards with the 500 3.5". When you hit them dead center near the bottom it explodes rather spectacularly, slinging aluminum 30' up. One time I just nicked the top of the soda and it didn't even move, just sprayed a mist to the side.

Anywho, recently the gun started firing to the right consistently, with random up and down (get a stack of holes to right of target). Was just my rear sight way too wobbly- tightened it up just enough to allow adjusting. Probably something I'll have to do each use.

Nevertheless, If my wife knew the cost of each round was 6x that of the soda, the gun (or me) would be for sale. Shhhhh

At the prices you infer, you must not be reloading and if that's the case, you're missing out on a lot of fun as well as $ savings. Don
