S&W 49 Factory Engraved Value

Hello all. You were very helpful with my last question on the engraved 24. I have a model 49 which is also believed to be factory engraved from the same collection as the 24. It does not have paperwork or box but is in excellent condition. I am selling for a widowed wife and they would like to avails waiting the 6 months for the SW paperwork. S/n J898988. I also have a model 27 factory engraved I will be posting about soon.

I see one of these (model 49 engraved) sold in auction for $4200 about 10 years ago with the box. Any idea what a fair starting price would be for one of these? All help is appreciated.

If you don't have the paperwork, how do you know it is factory engraved?

I’m no expert, but have learned a lot in the last few years having a few engraved, both by hand and laser. From viewing a lot of factory engraved guns, I don’t think this is factory but could be wrong. Without knowing the engraver, I’d be surprised if it brought over $2k on GB. Just my opinion

Missed this post until now. I think it is factory as the engraving on the cylinder shows a style seen on factory engraved guns. I'd letter it before trying to sell it. With a letter proving it to be factory I wouldn't be surprised for it to break the $3k mark perhaps by quite a bit. Here are three others, two of which are known to be factory and the third (first one) is one of mine awaiting a factory letter.

If one was to look on one of the large auction sites there is an engraved S&W 49, which appears to be very similar to this gun, down to the carpet, and hang tag...........S/N is 10 higher than the S/N listed for this gun.........asking price 6K
