I recntly got a S&W .500 4" in a trade and was looking for suggestions on what ammo to buy for it. I want the full power load for it (not anything watered down). I was going to order some from double tap ( that's where I buy all my 10mm ammo from) but wasn't sure how their .500 ammo was.

just about everyone makes ammo for it now.....cor-bon was the first, and still the hottest loads out there,I like the hornady 350 xtp mag factory loads for general use,, but be prepared for sticker shock..... it's why most people reload for this round...

Although I've had generally good results with Double Tap ammo, my chronograph says their 350gr Hornady XTPs are no where near advertised velocities. That comes from a gun that compares well with Winchester's Premium Platinum 400gr JSPs. The Winchester ran 1710fps out a 6.5" barrel.

You need to reload to really enjoy these guns. Don

Get yourself some 440 Cor Bon's, and hold on. Might want to wear a goalies mask also.

Check out the offerings of Ballistic Supply

They offer loads from softies all the way up to grizzly mulchers. The only round they sell that they do NOT recommend in a four inch barrel is their 700 gr -- -- top of the line load. Those bullets can tumble when they come out of shorter barrels. But the the slightly lighter 600 gr bullets seem to do just fine from four inches -- :D

The company offers sample packs that let you evaluate the power levels and perceived recoil associated with their different loads.

The Ballistic Supply is Bwana Kink Booty. No need to look any place else.

Thanks fork the quick replies. The ballistic supply site looks promising. I really want to start reloading but im still researching everything I can on it before I buy the equipment.

+1

Your first 100 rounds will pay for your reloading set up.

'that said, Ballistic Supply is THE place to buy loaded ammo...very nice people with an excellent product. I know they just moved, but are they taking orders yet?

FYI: Out of a 2" or 4" model, both the 700gr and 600gr loads begin to tumble at 27 yards (per Ranger Rick).

Good luck!

Thanks for that info. The folks at Ballistic Supply told me the 700s would be unstable from a shorter barrel, but I had the impression all their other loads would do fine from four inches.

I'm not sure it would matter out of two inches, because whatever a person was shooting at would probably be inside 27 yards and approaching fast with a bad attitude.

I use cast lead gas check bullets in my 500 S&W Handi-Rifle and reload em with my inexpensive Lee press. Thats about as cheap as you can go and shoot the big 500.
Gallon sized milk jugs don't have a chance at 100yds.

I personally like the Cor-Bon 440grain loading the best. I've also had good luck with the slightly less expensive 350 Hornadys, and have heard good things about Buffalo Bore ammo although have never tried any myself. I came up with a good handload that is a near Cor-Bon factory duplication load, but costs about 1/4th as much (or less) to shoot. I use the Cast-Performance SWCGC 440gr. bullet ahead of 40gr. of WW296 (or H110, same powder, different can) and a LR primer. Kaboom!!! Very accurate too.

MTKTM, you might try Leadheads bullets (proshootpro.com) instead of Cast Performance...Leadheads make the bullets for CorBon, so it's the exact same round. Plus, they're quite a bit cheaper...Cast Performance $53.95 for 100 ($0.54/ea.) vs. Leadheads $84.00 for 250 ($0.33/ea.). That's who I've been using with good results.

Thanks for the tip, grit. I'll check it out. I've got a fairly good supply of CPs, but will be ready to order more in a couple of months.

I use Hornady 300 grain SST's with the 4" 500 and Hornady 200 grain SST's for the 5" 460v. The Hornady 460 ammo is more than 50% less than the 500 Hornady ammo...go figure?

Both revolvers go Kaboom!! Massive concussion blasts.

Another big +1 for Leadhead bullets! Tom is a great guy to deal with and his bullets are top notch, for high speed mag loads theyh are all that I use.

'never understood that one...I mean, not even close on price...more than double? are you kidding me, Hornady?! What gives???
