S&W .500 vs RSR .454C

I guess I was flinching some. Much less with a shooting glove.

It seems to like the Hornady 300gr XTP, just fine. I hit a bowling pin at 25 yards 4 good solid hits which sent the pin sailing 8 -10 feet. Awesome.

Unfortunately I need to raise some money and listed this for sale.

If you going to try the flinch exercise, I suggest you load the empty cylinders with a empty case. You are not suppose to shoot the 500 Mag with empty chambers, has to go with the case pressures on the cylinder. I was told by S&W to make sure the cylinders are all loaded, even it is with spent cases.

Hi Redhawk1. Good point and something I should have suggested. The other reason for doing that is it will prevent you from seeing the edges of brass (which could be a give-away, destroying the effectiveness of the "flinch-test" I described).

I'm a little surprised S&W is saying they're that concerned about pressures, as the x frame cylinder has been tested up to something like 90,000 psi...

But regardless...thanks for the post.

I didn't know to leave the empties in the cylinders but I did .

Great "flinch-test". I fired 5 took out 2 empties put 2 live in and gave it a spin without looking and closed it up.

I didn't flinch

My 66-2 2 1/2" seems way worse with full house .357 loads then the FA model 83 .454 ever did!

I own a SRH 454 and have fired several 500's, the 500 is waaaaay more painful. I load down my 454 for most uses, full house loads are just too hard on the wrist.

I have never shot a .454C.

Some super hot .44Mag, but no comparison to the .500 Mag.

I really like the .500 wish I had something else to sell. Maybe my Ruger No.1 in .458 Lott.

When I bought my first 500 (the original 8 3/8") back when they first came out, I'm thinking it was either '02 or '03, it was quite the curiosity at the range. I didn't try to lord it over anyone, but people would notice it and come over and ask what it was. I'd then give them the option of shooting it if they wanted. Some would, others passed. Good thing I reloaded for it though as it got fired a lot by other people.

I find that I'm happiest if I wear a glove while shooting the 500. It gives me a bit of a stinger if I don't. With a glove it's not bad at all. I later acquired a 4" and that has a larger comp and seems to actually kick less than the longer barrel, although the muzzle flash is much more noticeable. I was shooting it at dusk one time and wow!
