I was working my way through the Performance Center's glass case at SHOT yesterday and was surprised to see a Model #58. They are going to make a run of them this summer. And yes, it has a lock.

Gander Mountain had one box of Remington 210 grain JSP in 41 Magnum. It was a 50 round box, and was priced at $69.99.

I wonder how many of these will actually sell to the new comers that are actually checking pricing on anything?

For about twice as much I could get into a 416 Rigby, gun and ammo.

I can't believe Gander Mountain prices. They wanted $69.50 for a 250 round box of 70 grain Nosler ballistic tips. I bought from Midway for $42. They wanted $36.95 for a 50 round bag of .243 brass. I bought locally for $20.99. I wonder how they are staying in business, is anyone buying there?

The good news on 41 maggie ammo is its often considered an orphan and slow moving round. If you scrounge at gunshows (one of the few things I'm really good at is scrounging) you'll often find the ammo pretty cheap. The problem is you take what you find and we're working down dwindling stocks of it. Reminds me of my never ending search for 22 Jet ammo. Its still cheaper to reload. But you also need to be searching the world for .410/210gr pills. Those also appear on private tables with some regularity.

I too wonder if these 'geniuses' have an organized plan on how to go out of business!!

I got excited when I saw Mas' blog about it:

I might need to get one and pull the lock . . . we'll see how I feel when the excitement wears off.

I was suprised to see the M58 listed under new products at Sports South, Inc.'s online catalog. More surprising was that they had it listed in 4" blue or nickel with an alloy( I assume scandium) frame. The catalog numbers are 150500 for blue and 150501 for nickel. Maybe someone at the SHOT Show can confirm this. It's not listed yet on the S&W website that I could find. Bob!!

Roadranger,

I held the #58 at the show and it was nice and hefty the way it is suppose to be. I had just put down the 325TR and the weight difference was extremely noticeable.

Pepper, that makes sense. SSI's copy people are prone to mistakes. Did you notice if the M58 had the traditional heavy barrel or a shrouded barrel like a M22 or M21? Thanks Bob!

They'll be gone soon!

No, they'll probably ask for bailout money.

I saw a box of Speer 41 Magnum ammo for $87.50 at the local Sportmans Warehouse

I reload for the 41 AND I've been waiting for Smith to do this - so I encourage these sorts of postings (mine is phony) to keep the "41 Magnum Infidels" in line to ensure I'll get my nickel 58. OK, I'll suffer the lock but I figure I can disguise the thing with a stainless plug.

Hopefully the thing has a square butt.

Happy to see they kept the lock, will make mine without it that much more desirable, not to mention, more money i'll save to spend on older, pre-lock Smiths. My truck has locks and keys, not my revolvers! Never bought one, never will!

Original Model 58's were not designed to be shot with full power 41 Magnum loads but a 41 Magnum 'Police' load. Using full power 41 Magnum loads will cause a fixed sighted 58 to shoot low. Now if the new 58 has adjustable sights, no problem, but then it would be a Model 57.-Dick

ATTN. Smith & Wesson.....
Ruger thanks you for the many thousands of dollars they have made off me, since you came out with the lock!

I don't know why y'all keep saying that. Ruger has locks that are getting in the way of an easily installed lanyard ring.

They had the Craig Boddington book "Buffalo!" for $24.97, and that was not on sale. Retail is $39.95. I walked out with a copy.

Might try Georgia Arms for ammo. I just bought 100 Gold Dot 210 gr. hollow points for $49.00 plus shipping, and 200 lead 210 gr. lead semi WC for $78.00 plus shipping.
These are loaded in new Starline brass.
Total for 300 rounds shipped was $146.00.

How on Earth did you manage this? Did you order from them or was this a personal tranaction?

I just tried to order 100 of the .41 SWC, 50 of the .41 Gold Dots, and 100 .38 Special +P 158 SWCs and they wanted to charge me $27.00 to ship it. "Remove From Cart" is my only reply. I can ship 600 rounds of 5.56 across the country for just over $20 w/ insurance so I'm not sure if they hand deliver or what.

If there's a trick to getting your prices, let me know.

Thanks,
Scott

The 58s I saw were definitely NOT alloy or scandium, but were all steel, with lock.
