Today I purchased a 586 Classic 4 inch barreled revolver. Have been looking for a clean 586 for about a year, and this morning found this as new in box Classic. I have generally avoided the newer S&W revolvers since the introduction of the in frame lock, although I have owned two every day carry J frame guns with lock and had no problems with either. This 586 is as well made a Smith as I've seen in quite a while, the general quality of the build, blue job, fit and finish are nothing short of excellent. On top of the fact it looked unfired, had its original blue S&W case, papers, and diamond grips, made it even more attractive. I work in a large collector gun store and see lots of S&W handguns as well as just about everything else in the firearm realm, so was a bit surprised by how well done the gun was. Comparing it to an lightly used original 586 that was in stock, it came out ahead of the older gun in terms of solid lock up, quality of blue, and fitting of crane to frame. On top of that it was priced better. So what's not to like, bought it on the spot.

Congratulations, and I think you made a good buy. I wouldn't, and don't let internet riff raft over an internal lock stop me from enjoying the new S&W revolvers. Especially when the lock can be disabled. I really like the classics, and for the price that they are going for used I say get a new one. I did just that with two new Smiths over the past year, and and can't wait to add a new model 29 Classic or 629 (undecided). Let's see some pictures!
