S&W 59

I went to an estate sale last weekend end ended up with several new guns. I posted the 25-5 I got there in the revolver forum. This 1976 Model 59 was laying on the table when I went in to look around. It didn't look to bad except for the front left side. Someone had engraved a number on the slide and frame. It was priced at $200 but with the engraving on it I decided to leave it for somebody else.

I had to go back at 1:00 that afternoon to do the paperwork on the other ones I bought. While I was waiting I noticed the 59 still sitting there. They told me they had reduced the prices on the remaining guns so I decided to have another look at it. When I saw the price I decided I could tolerate the engraving after all.

Guess I need to visit my Brother-In-Law in Mississippi and go to some estate sales.

Congrats on a very good buy. At that price either live with the engraving or buff the heck out of it. Might be a Case File Number.....

That would be my guess. I've got several that I've bought from a local police supply store. They buy confiscated guns from local departments after cases are closed and several of them have case numbers on them.

That was defiantly a NO brainer. I would overlook the engraving also for that price. Great find.

I looked at a High Standard 103 SK yesterday locally that had pretty much the same thing but in four places. Price was good but I’ve got a couple already that don’t have the extra embellishment engraving. I passed.

I think the 59’s are really nice and an important part of the S&W history, (I’ve got three which says something,) and I’m sure you will enjoy your “new” one too.

I already have one just a tad newer than that one and I basically paid their original asking price for it with no added engraving.
But for a Benjamin I'd have brought that one home to keep it company!

Those look like police evidence numbers. For $100, you got a great deal. I would have paid the $200 and been happy!

Two things hint that your slide might be earlier than the 1976 ship date.

IIRC the shape of the slide stop notch had changed to a straight cut by then,
also the barrel bushing on your slide is fully enclosed where again IIRC it had changed to the "Horse shoe style by then.
