This is my first regular post, so if this should be some where else, let me know. But I'm a compact handgun kinda guy. Love my S&W mountain guns and my light weight semi autos. So why does Smith's six shot 10 mm revolver have to be on an 'N' frame, with heavy full lug barrel. If you can produce a seven shot .357 686, then there should be plenty of room for six .40's In the same cylinder/frame. And while at it, let's put it in the mountain gun platform. Or at least a standard weight barrel sans the lug. To me, this would be the perfect double action packing gun...unless we have a true 40cal/10mm rimmed cartridge? Who's up for petitioning Smith make us one: and a whole new 40 S&W Special cartridge while at it?

Adios,

This gets suggested every so often. See L Frame 10mm .

I bought a 610 in the early 90s but replaced it a few years ago with a model 69 in 44 magnum which does everything I want a revolver to do better. A large part of that is that in addition to being lighter the L frame guns handle better for me.

A 6 shot 10mm L frame would nicely fill the gap between the 7 shot 686 and the 5 shot 69. But to be honest if I wanted a compact, light 10mm I would probably end up with a Glock 29.

If you want to try it,,,, shoot a Ruger GP100 WC 3inch 10mm!!!!!!!!
Ps got one ,,, with "Nuickler" loads it is "sumptin"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem with a small frame 10mm is crimp jump. Since 10mm headspaces on the case mouth and not the rim you can't heavily crimp the bullet like you would any other magnum round. A slight taper crimp is probably not enough to keep heavier 180 and 200 grain bullets from coming out of the case.

L frame 40 refined

The new S&W 40 Special would be a true revolver friendly rimmed case, not sure of length or case capacity. But to stay safe in the L frame/six rounds, max/hunting load 200 gr at 1200 fps, defense load 180 gr around 1,000 FPS. A little like the original 41 mag., but not quite...I guess the gamut of existing 10mm loads. Then marlin and Winchester Chamber their 94s in trapper versions...yeah! Sorry guys, I do like the six gun carbine same cal. Combos...heee haaa!

I thought we were talking about the 10mm in a revolver! ? ! IN A REVOLVER the 10mm headspace is achieved by the moon clip, not case length. If this was not true, you could not shoot 40S&W from a 610 rev. I heavy roll crimp the 10mm in all my bowling pin loads, 10,000+!

Many years ago, a member of this forum had a Model 28 converted by David Clements to 10MM, back when he worked on S&W's. The owner posted a bunch of pictures on the forum and IIRC had a video of it on early pre-Google Youtube. It was a great looking revolver. The shorter N-frame cylinder worked well with the 10MM round. The owner moved overseas and put it up for sale. It went at a high price.

Although expensive, it was a lot easier to get barrels re-bored back then. Projects like that are much harder to do now.

Major point of this is N-frame is probably a really good 10MM platform, but the weight needs to be pared down. Badly.

A L-frame 10mm Auto revolver would be nice but forget about getting a new .40/10mm cartridge for it. ;)

What you're suggesting, velocity wise, is pretty much what a 10mm Auto can do anyway.

Your desire for a "rimmed" cartridge could easily be addressed if someone in the industry would support the 10mm Auto Rim idea.

Starline says they're not interested & many of us have asked already.

I don't think jump crimp would necessarily be a problem in a stainless steel L-frame.

My 5" 686+ weighs the same as my 4" 610, 42oz.

If one of the major bullet makers made .40/10mm jacketed bullets with a cannelure that would be a plus.

However, I converted my 4" 610 to shoot 10mm Magnum, which does give you power a hair under 41 Magnum power (5.9%< capacity).

With ~33% more powder capacity jump crimp has never been a problem, for me, using non-cannelure jacketed bullets with a taper crimp in the 10 MAG.
