The K22 became the model 17 in 1957 and continued with the standard barrel until 1989. The full lug barrel version from 1990 till 1995. The 10 shot version from 1996 till 1999 and a Heritage Series in 2001.

The 617 in its variations has been around since 1989.

I've never owned a 617 but I love my early K22's.
I would imagine the 617 would be just as good a gun though heavier with its full lug barrel.

There are versions of the 617 available without the full lug. And, there are the 17-6 versions (blued) with the full lug.
