S&W 617 customized

Over the winter my gunsmith cut back the underlug on my six inch Model 617 and I am as happy as can be with it. I hope I have figured out how to attach the 2 photos I took today.

This +1000! This is what they should be making from the factory! My preference would be the 4" version, but regardless the underlug should be GONE! I feel the exact same way about the 686. Get rid of the dang useless too heavy underlug!

Beautiful! I love my 617's but do find the 6" flavor a touch nose heavy! I'd buy one like that in a heartbeat! ( Common S&W, listen to you customers. Maybe a 617 Pro w 5" slimmed, 1/2 lug barrel , even?)


p.s. If you don't mind me asking, approximately how much did the mod cost you?

I like the full lug look best...but the feel and balance of the ''regular''bbl best.Since I don't look at myself while I'm shooting(that front sight is pretty captivating),I'll go with the slimmer barrel finish.

I agree... a 4 inch 617 half lug like the scarce mountain gun version should be a catalog standard... and just so you know S&W did make a 686+ 5 inch half lug as a stocking dealer special...

I like it. Maybe someday I'll do that to my 686+ 6". It's a great gun but muzzle heavy.

DLV- mind telling us who the smith was and how much it cost you. I just bought a 4" Ruger GP100 to get the same type of gun. Would like a smith to keep it company.

Who did the gunsmithing...

I do not know if forum rules let me post this information. If I am doing wrong, my apologies. The gunsmith is Corey Sibbio who owns Fort Corey Customs in Hyannis, MA. [email protected]

I do not know what he charges for this work. He is a friend and fellow Marine. We have done favors for each other over many years. I left him the gun last year, then went to Florida for seven months. He had a high speed cutter which gave out before the job was done and finished it with a lot of hand work. I think the cost of a carbide cutter is something just under $400 and he would need to get one if more of this work comes in. Mine was bright shiny and it is necessary to bead blast it so the finish is uniform. He was going to give it to me as a gift. I put $500 into his hand and ordered him to take it. I guess if you are interested drop him a line and ask him cost and turn around time. This is my absolutely favorite handgun now.

I did mine years back, I never could get used to the full underlug for a timber tramping handgun.
