S&W 617 hand replacement

I see that the 617 revolver has a different shaped hand. Do they make oversize hands for the 617?

I have never seen or heard of any. Possible alternatives would include making one out of a regular K frame hand, or get a new extractor. The new extractor would have full size, unworn ratchets on it.

Thanks...another option I would like to explore is a longer hammer sear. Is that something available?

As far as I am aware of, all the hammer DA sears are the same length. One could be made longer with a spot of tig weld, then worked to the desired length.

I put the factory hammer back in and it times correctly. BTW: The hammer I was using is not yours. Numrich has the sears in stock.

Why are you asking about a longer DA sear? The length is critical as it only causes the trigger to lift the hammer until there is a smooth transition to the second stage of the DA pull. As long as this transition is smooth (as felt by your finger) the DA sear is the correct length. Making it longer will not increase the height the hammer is raised in DA if that is what you are thinking.

Only if your S&W was made before 1910.

This is a picture of a 1903 .32 5th change.

Lacking a wider hand, I tried several triggers to find one that would improve the carry up on my 1942 M&P Frankengun. It now has a model 66 trigger.

To clarify: on one chamber, carry up was OK on single action but a close tie on double action. Changing the trigger added to the DA hammer arc and allowed a millisecond more for the hand to rotate the cylinder.
It's an 80 year old revolver with a 40 year old cylinder.

NO, it will not! Re-read my first post! I already explained this!!! I have only been working on S&W revolvers for a bit over 60 years It's called experience

Hand travel as you put it has nothing to do with a S&W! The thickness of the hand is the critical dimension for carry-up.

I bet you a a 10 shot cylinder, it takes a different type of hand from the six shot cylinder. YOU CAN BUY A HAND FOR IT, BUT REMEMBER TO TELL THEM ITS A 10 SHOT.

Actually the OP only states it's a "617".
My guess is that like many he omitted the dash revision not thinking it was important enough to type out.
In reality the Model 617 ( no dash) introduced around 1990 was a six shot revolver ,
Iirc the 10 shot alloy cylinder was introduced in the 617-2 revision in 1996 and reintroduced in 1997 with a SS cylinder due to poor sales.
1998 617-4 SS cylinder.

I would think so, needs to call and check, need Ser#, model #, etc.. Best to have gun in hand when you call!
