S&W 629-1 frame questions

thank you very much.... I appreciate all the help... also I can tell that you have lot of experience with Smiths and Wesson revolvers.. some people said that a rear sight assembly can be used on different models.. like: it will fit K, L or N frames.. I have a K frame, model 66-2 357 magnum and the rear sight dimensions does not match my N frame 629-1 44 magnum... do they have to be same caliber for them to fit in different frames? in another words..you can't use an N frame 357 magnum rear sight assembly on an N frame 44 magnum. please let me know if this is true... in my case, both of my revolvers use the old style square end leaf.. thanks again.....

On the old rear sights with the square front tang, there are several lengths and screw hole positions. You have to match the rear sight to a particular frame. I don't have a listing of what sight matches what frame. If I need a rear assembly for an old style, I just try different sights on the gun in hand to find one that fits.

On the new style with the rounded front tang, all rear sights fit all newer frames. The new frames have a rounded cutout to match the new sight assembly.

The rear sight blade itself, windage screw, nut, etc. is interchangeable with all old and new style rear sight assembly.

ok... wish me luck.. I just purchased one on ebay (square tang) that the vendor had for sale from a 629 44 magnum, but he did not mention what dash number, just that came from a 629 44 magnum.. I have the 629-2... hope it fits.....if not, I guess I have to keep it as a memory..... maybe if I am lucky that square sight will fit my frame that uses the square tang... hoping for the best..... thanks.....

hello tool guy: this is me again.. I have been away for a while... too much work... any how... I have a question: I made a action wrench out of a plank of oak... and the canted barrel came out nice and easy.... so here is the question: I k now we talked about putting blue ( medium) locktite on the the threads. so I have a question: I know it was a common problem that smith and wesson overtorqued the barrels like in my case... now if you loosed it up and then time the barrel... dead center.. that should be ok...??? or once the barrel is overtorqued... is no good??? well.. I hand tight that barrel.. and it gets to about 11:00 oclock... do you think that will be enough torque to time that barrel to 12:00 oclock and I should not have to put the locktite or should I just go ahead and put a couple of drops of locktite and time that barrel and get it over with???? thanks... let me know....
