I picked up an excellent condition 629-3 Mountain Gun in .44 Magnum. Had the box, manual, papers, wax paper, the black plastic trigger cup or whatever it is ( I guess that’s part of it). Box was even pristine. Serial on this is BPM1xxx. I have wanted a 629 44 Mag for a while. A long while.

I saw one of these years back in a gun store and wanted one. The price tag was still o on the box and showed it was $489.00. Ahhh miss those days.

I can’t believe I got this.

Before I got this I sold off a revolver (a K6s) and bought a Walther Q4 SF. Amazing gun but I regretted getting it right after because I wanted a another revolver. So I thought I’d sell the Q4 and find a revolver. I saw several revolvers on a trade forum and I found a guy locally who had this 629-3 Mountain Gun. I figured I’d offer a trade and get shot down. He was asking cash but I messaged him anyway. Nope he was looking for one of these Walther’s for his wife.

Less than two hours later we met and did a trade. I was smiling all the way home. I just love this revolver. The action is great. I checked the cylinder lock up and timing and it was great. He advertised it in like new condition and it sure was. Turns out he was a guy I had done deals with in past and he was always good to go. Apparently it was a safe queen and was shot very little.

I plan to buy some wood grips for it or maybe G10. I like Altamont and have a set on my 642. Have a chest rig for it ordered for when I go to my godfather’s ranch. But yes very happy with this find.

My 629 MG is thought of as a 44 special that I can shoot magnums in if I want to. I rarely want to. I enjoy shooting specials in it; the magnums, not so much.

BTW, my MG sports Pachmayr Compacs. They are comfortable, hand-fillling, yet reasonably compact stocks.

I took the grips off and put them in the box as a matter of fact. I had a set of pacs I could have sworn for a K/L frame but they fit perfectly. Maybe because it’s a round butt? Or maybe they were for an N frame I can’t remember.

Sierra , I hope you are a reloader.
All I can think about is how sweet 7gr 231 in .44 mag case pushing a 240gr lswc would bein that 629.

I’m not a reloaded but my godfather is. He lets me press whatever ammo I want so I’ll give that a shot. Thanks for the advice!

Nice gun! I kinda wanted one of those but I ran into a 6" dash-6 last year at the LGS and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. It's a real nice shooter. I can actually hit 6 magnums in a paper plate and even better with .44 Specials. (For me, that's good @ 25 yds.!)
Your story is proof that it doesn't hurt to make an offer; the worse they can say is no.

Fun guns to shoot. Just about the right amount of weight for the .44 mag round for me. quick on target. 329pd at 25 oz, not so much..

Great gun! Very fun to shoot with .44 Magnum and .44 Special Cowboy rounds. It will go great with your Godfather's ranch! When I am up on my hunt lease I will often have my 4" 629-5 or 3" 629-4 with me

Yeah I agree. I figured what do I have to loose. I honestly thought he would say no. But when I saw my email the next morning and this gent agreeing to a trade I was shocked. My gun I feel was of equal value but that doesn’t mean someone is going to agree to a trade. We both got something we wanted.

The difference is I got the 629 and drove home like I stole it. This is one of the grail guns on my list. Not only was I shocked I got it I was surprised it was in such great condition.

Yeah he has land up north of DFW, TX that border Oklahoma. He has has the usual. Cattle, horses but also a bad hog issue. They destroy his feeders all the time. You don’t go out on the land unarmed. Plus he reloads and has a pistol and rifle range set up.

You can literally press some ammo and step out the back door and there is the range.

I tried all kinds of wood on my 629 mtn gun. None comfortable with full house loads. Went back to the original Hogues. They work the best. Iffen I was you I'd avoid Altimonts like the plague. They are way to thin in the shoulder area and 1/2" too long in the butt.

Valid point. I actually took the factory grips off and put them in the box. I had a set of Pacs I had that for perfectly so for now it’s wearing those.

Hard to handle

Save your money on Grips, shoot as is. If I were you
just help your reloading Friend buy reloading
components.

The wood grips are torture, even shooting my
reloads. All mine have the stock rubber grips,
but than I shoot quite a bit.

The best to you and your endeavors.
