S&W 639

I'm shopping locally for a 639 as we speak. I have a 39-2 and a 39 no-dash, and I prefer all steel guns.

My 639 seems awfully heavy in my hand after shooting my 39-2. Other than that, no complaints.

Well, that's not totally true. My 639 shoots to the left, no matter how much adjustment I give it.

Here's mine:

100 shots rapid fire @10 yards.

About the only thing I can add is I rarely see them locally and when I do they are priced high usually. I think I remember seeing one in movie Beverly Hills Cop. Also a S&W model 3000 in that movie.

I bought mine NIB (that's unusual for me) in 1985. Mine has a very smooth action and I will swear it has a lighter DA pull than SA.

I have 2 retired cops that are works in progress . The 639s are heavy but they do make recoil almost nonexistent and you can make the action as smooth as silk. Mine are great shooters.

Rescued this one but got it for a song.
Previous owner had tried to fit Millett sights designed for a 1911. The stake on fornt sight kept falling off. Gave it to a very good 'smith near here. He welded up the top of the slide and cut proper dovetails for the Millett rear and also the fiber-optic front. Did a nice action clean up too. It's now my daily carry gun and performs well at the range too.

Grif,

You don't need all three of those 639's. You ought to sell me one of the square trigger guard models. Either one would be okay; I'm not picky.

Sorry, I just can't bring myself to part with even one....i'm sure I will probably end up with more at some point, they're one of my favorite (ok, are my favorite) S&W pistols....

Just bought mine. It fits my hand better than any other pistol I've ever held.

Very nice, it looks to have a 669 slide/barrel, or was it chopped?

I'm new to the 639 and don't know much more about the 669...so I can't answer the question. However, I'd love to know the answer.

I do know that when I stripped it, I didn't see any evidence of modification.

Now I think I see what you are talking about. Is the flare, or recess, at the barrel end of the slide is too short for a 639?

Looks like a 639 frame/669 slide-barrel hybrid to me - very nice, though.

It must be a hybrid. Oh, well. I guess that's what happens when you buy something based tactile response rather than a base of knowledge.

Now I'm really curious to see how it performs at the range.

I would like to see comments and photos of the S&W 639.
It never hurts to ask, right?

Is that the correct safety? It looks like a gen 3 safety (no ugly screw). My 439...which is a Frankengun if ever there was one, has the same safety (I know mine isn't original because the gun is blued and the safety on mine is either Stainless or possibly just "in the white" unfinished).

Your 639 is a beautiful Gen 2 gun by the way.

Any 639 magazine available?

Looking to buy but nothing out there...

Any help?

I have a S&W 639 w/ round trigger guard and 3 magazines, that I am looking to sell. I purchased it in January 2013 and have only used it a half a dozen times, at most. I find it too heavy, the grip uncomfortably big and just overall does not suit me.

I may be interested in a 639 need a round trigger guard pm me and let me know what your thinking.
