Hey guys, need a little advice. I'm thinking about having the hammer bobbed on a 66-2 snubby. It has seen its fair share of use so I don't think I'm destroying a collectors piece. I want to make it a snag free carry snub. Has any one here bobbed the hammer on their 66? If so, how do you like it? Have you experienced any problems as far striking primers? If you have any pictures I would love to see them. Thanks in advance!!

If you bought an extra hammer assembly and cut that one, you could always return the gun to orginal condition if you wanted. Just a thought.

I like bobbed hammers on concealed carry pieces but strongly recommend also removing the single action notch. There is no way to safely lower a bobbed hammer should someone manage to engage the single action.

you-tube has a vid on how to do it with a dremel and a cut off wheel.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't have the skills or confidence to do it myself, so I'll probably have a pro do it so I know it's done right.

I have thought about that as well. Have the spare just in case is always a good idea. I'm thinking I might just keep that way once it's done so I never have to worry about it again, then I'll always have a K-frame snubby for carry.

I like bobbed or internal hammers myself on my carry revolvers. Internal is my first preference but in this case it has to be bobbed. I will definitely have it converted to DAO because I totally agree with you on the hammer lowering issue.

If anyone has a S&W 66 with a bobbed hammer please share your pictures.

Snowbandit: Have you ever experienced any light strikes with any of your bobbed hammer revolvers?

I too, have a 66 snub (dash-5) that I have considered bobbing...

I like the work of Gemini Customs, and see that they have a package for S&W revolvers...

Is there really any "collectibility" factor in a -5 model? (enough to dissuade me from bobbing it?)

How difficult is it to remove the single action notch?

Would a bobbed hammer effect the reliability of primer strikes?

I like Gemini Customs work alot, its top notch and awesome!! I think you have to determine the collectibility factor because everyone is different. Removing the single action notch from what I am told isn't difficult but i wouldn't attempt to do it. As far as bobbed hammers and light primer strikes goes, I am trying to find that out as well.

If any one here has a bobbed hammered model 66 please share the pictures.

I have a good factory DAO (factory bobbed) hammer that I removed from a Model 64-5. I think this is the same hammer that fits a Model 66. I would trade this for a K frame hammer that has the spur or would also consider selling. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer. I think I'll keep it DAO once the work is done.

I have a 66-1, 2-1/2" that was my father's off-duty gun. He also shot PPC competition with it. The gun has a bobbed hammer and smooth trigger. It has an action job, Millett rear sight, and Pachmayr "Compac" grips. It has been in this configuration since around 1978. It still rides in its original DeSantis holster. I'll send you a picture of it. My 66-1 retains the single action notch - it has been used on many occasions.

Thanks for the picture in advance. Did your father have a reason behind why he keep the single action notch?

He called the gun a "Freak" because the accuracy was like a six inch! During the 70s and early 80s, his PD qualified back to the 50 yard line. He shot the gun all DA and told me he shot more 100%s with that gun than his 4 and 6 inch guns. He told me that would feel comfortable taking a shot at 100 yards with that snubbie; in single action. You do have to develop a technique for cocking and lowering the hammer- I guess I'm just used to it. It's not like you do it everyday. I'm not sure what you are going to use the weapon for, or if you'd need the SA option. I'll give you the same answer my dad gave me in the 70s when I asked him why he always carried a gun: "I'd rather have it and never need it, than to need it and not have it."

koz5614: Thanks!!!! Awesome pictures!! Can't wait to have mine bobbed.

I show this one, a DAO-modified Ashland 3" 66-2, to show the distinctive "hump" of the factory spurless hammer. As has been discussed, I opted to purchase a replacement (DAO) hammer and retained the original spurred example so it may be returned to factory-original DA/SA configuration should I so desire.

I, too, like the Compacs for aid in taming Magnum loads.

Awesome picture as well!!! The factory bobbed hammer is starting to grow on me.

I like bobbed hammers on CC revolvers, but only on fixed sight models...the adj. sight can still snag on clothing during the draw and would seem to negate the advantage of the bobbed hammer, IMO. I have two j frames that I did myself...thinking about doing it to my 3" 65 also. Definitely remove the single action cocking notch from the hammer...only way to render it a true DAO.

I agree about the adjustable sights snagging while drawing from under cover garments... and am wondering if anyone has experience with the cylinder and slide fixed sights that are available for K frames?

The rear sight seems simple enough to mount, but I have long wondered what changes would have to be made to the front sight..in order for point of aim to remain workable?
(I love the aesthetics of the high front sight on the 66, and would hate to change it too much..)

Thanks

You must be reading my thoughts. The Cylinder & Slide rear fixed sight is what I want to install on my 66-2 when I have the hammer bobbed.

Does any one know of any adjustments that might have to be made to the front sight if you install the Cylinder & Slide fixed rear sight?

Here is info taken directly from C&S website:
Smith & Wesson Adjustable Sight Revolvers The EXTREME DUTY FIXED SIGHT conversion will convert your adjustable sight K,L,orN frame Smith & Wesson revolver to a fixed sight tactical revolver. The dovetail front sight requires machining a dovetail in the front sight base. Installation of the dovetail front sight allows you to zero your revolver precisely for windage and elevation.
Price:
$115.50

Seems as though it is necessary to machine a dovetail into the front sight ramp, in order to adjust for elevation and windage....
I wonder if one could get lucky and have the fixed rear sight match up without having to change out the front sight?

Seems like a serious commitment, what with the price of the sights and machine work...
perhaps I can have someone round off the sharp edges on my rear sight??

C&S does have a "email a technician" feature on their website, so maybe I will do that and report back here.

I dehorned my 3" mod 13 fixed sight and it is really a smooth gun to carry. Hard to imagine what getting that hammer spur out of the way does to the portability aspect.

Installed a factory bobbed hammer on my 696. I like it. but not as much as my bobbed mod 13. If you really want to go belly gun, you can pull the rear sight off. I just rounded the sharp edges with a file and that seemed to eliminate the snagging.
BTW, the open back Presentation Compac Pachmayr work great with these 3" RB Smiths.

Just gotta decide how you're going to carry it and what the best options for you are.
