The pic is my model 66-1.SN 47K75xx. Pinned and recessed, Target Trigger, and Hammer.
Red ramp front sight, White outline rear sight (steel). 6 1/2 inch barrel. Not sure of grips.

This stainless steel version of the model 19, shoots as well as my 586. Why doesn't the 66 get the same respect as the 586 or 686?????

Sir, I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that 66s get no respect. They're immensely popular among the members here, especially in the 2-1/2- and 4-inch varieties.

I'd bet the guys who favor the x86s think the situation is reversed--that the 66 and 19 get all the glory while the x86s languish in obscurity.

Perception is a funny thing, no?

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I like my 4" 586 and think it's a beautiful revolver, but I love my 3" 66-2. Just as accurate if not more so than the 586. Easier to pack and just the perfect all around useful revolver S&W has ever made IMO. Here is a pic of mine for about the 50th time. I never get tired looking at it.

The 66 is my favorite revo (I own five of them), but I don't shoot magnums. The 586/686 are L frame revos that are better suited for magnum rounds. The 66 is the K frame with the "snipped off" forcing cone which is not well suited for frequent magnum usage.

I deon't know the history of the grips. All I know is that they came with the gun.

Funny notion. When I think about what I own and use, and what my friends own and use, there are a few 586s, no 686s, that I can think of - and a BUNCH of 19s and 66s.

If I were boondocking for any extended period of time, a 6-inch 66 like yours would be on my "first-choice list." 44 Magnums are great guns, but they are heavy, and their ammunition is heavy and bulky. You can just about carry two boxes of 357s for each box of 44s.

I had wanted a 66 since college days (late 70s). I finally bought a 66-1 4"this year, it is one of the best pointing guns I have. I have shot it much more than my 6" 686. So for me the 66 is preferred. However, I do not shoot much full power 357 mag. I think collectors prefer the 19 and 66. Magnum shooters prefer the L frames for durability and full lug balance. JMHO

I am exceedingly fond of of BOTH the M-66 and the M-686. But the M-66 is handier, and will conceal better.

If you shoot a great many magnum rounds, you should consider the larger model, or the fine Ruger GP-100.

But the backpacker or general camper, who doesn't expect to fire a lot of .357's, may well prefer the lighter M-66.

I have found both to be very accurate, and think which is more so depends more on the individual gun than on the model. But the heavier M-686 recoils less.

My 686 is a big lug.

Compared to my 66-1, but I have been casting envious eyes at the 686SSR. That gun might nose out the 66 if I had one.

so what generation of the 66 would b preferred? I always heard -2 ?
never saw a 3 inch 66, wow!

Go with a 66-3. It has the circa 1988 improvements to lessen the liklihood of cylinder endshake after firing many magnum rounds. Later ones also have that, but I'd avoid MIM parts and The Lock.

Some prefer the Pinned and Recessed guns, but they are no better that I can tell, and need to be attended to sooner after substantial use.

QC on my M-66-3 is at least as high as I've ever seen on earlier ones, and timing has been perfect. The action soon "wore-in" for smoothness, too. I've owned it since 1990, and like it better all the time.
