Being a holiday weekend I haven't called S&W yet, but I wondered if anyone here would know the answer to this question.

I have gotten a 686+ for Christmas and after shooting it today I was home cleaning it and I see a very minor flaw on the gun that sort of bugs me.

At the end of the extractor rod, there is this small knurled or textured section that interfaces with the locking bolt, that textured section is all scuffed and ruffed up. To me it looks like when someone was installing it they put a pliers on the checkering and mushed it in a few spots.

Would S&W replace this part, including covering the cost of shipping, for me? I've never dealt with their warranty department and I don't know how they would handle such a minor cosmetic issue.

Thanks

Call them up on Monday and offer to send a picture of the extractor rod. My guess is that they will E-Mail you a shipping label and bring the gun back to replace the rod. It would bug me, but I am one of these guys that is anal about cosmetics on new guns.

Let us know how it turns out.

Here's a picture, from a few different angles, of what I'm talking about. The camera doesn't pick it up as much as you can see it when holding the revolver in hand. I know it's a very minor cosmetic flaw but it just looks bad.

Yep, looks buggered.
Perhaps you could send them the pictures first and ask if they'll send you a new rod. It's easy to replace. Remember that it's a left hand thread. You can go to their web site under customer service-contact us.

I get not liking it on principle or to the eye, but it's small enough and has zero effect on function; I'd ignore it.

A current generation 686 is a fine revolver but no collectible -- it's a worker, it's going to collect more nicks and scratches. I wouldn't trouble myself with calls, shipping, etc.

If they will fix it at no cost I don't see why I wouldn't have it repaired. I just don't know if they will cover shipping till I have a chance to call them this week.

When I worked at the gun shop one of our customers brought in his revolver for us to send in for warranty repair. All of the issues were corrected but one. The documentation returned with the revolver said to the effect of, not a defect in materials or workmanship not covered by warranty. It was the crane screw slot wallowed out that did not get covered.

Good Luck.

Yeah I'll call and see. Worst case scenario is I buy a new rod from brownells for $11.

If that revolver was purchased new S&W will cover it and pay for the shipping. Provided that they don't think that this was done with pliers but was instead the result of a knurling tool that became clogged with metal fines. If they think you were the one doing some "exploring" with some pliers it's probably about a 10% chance they'll kick up a fuss about fixing someone else's mistake. BTW, the factory has special tools for installing extractor rods and I don't think you would find a pair of pliers anywhere in the assembly area. This was either an error in machining or it was damage that was done after that revolver left the factory.

If there was something on one of my guns that bothered me as much as this bothers you I would go as far as to pay to have it fixed to make the gun "right" in my eyes. I have always had great service from S&W although my issues were functional & not cosmetic.

I see no reason for them not to replace it. Just not right to ship a new Revolver like that! I'd be on the horn first thing Monday morning!
