S/W 686

I have decided that I would like to add a 686 revolver to my ownership and wanted to ask the question to people that are in the know. Lookin to purchase a clean and unabrused early model of this example. It could be a 2 1/2" to 6" It could have a nickle or blue finish. I'm open to what is availble. Thanks for reading. The 686 is made of stainless steel. The 586 is carbon steel and comes in nickle or blue. Otherwise they are the same size and function. They are great guns. Hope you find one to your satisfaction.

The 686 is a great gun, but the barrel length is your choice to fit whatever your shooting requirements are. If you are strictly a target shooter, a 6" would probably be better. If you want it for carry, the 2 1/2" would probably suit best. If it is for home defense/bedside table, a 4" would be most common. They are very plentiful, so I would determine your primary use then go for it.

After years of resisting "L" frames, I bought an no dash used one. Eight variations later (all used, no dash models), I have learned to like them a lot. I still prefer the "N" frames, but they are excellent guns in their own right, in all barrel lengths. Good luck.

Wow, what a great come back. Thanks guys. This would be a bedside occasional carrie for me. The 586 smith would be another choice. I'm leaning toward the 2 1/2 but I would be happy with the 4". Question I have is would I be looking for a dash 1-2-3-or4. I'm interested in value also. Dan

The dash # isn't real important, but if it is a no dash or a dash 1 look for a "M" stamped in the yoke frame. This was a recall and the "M" designates it has been fixed. The other engineering changes were minor internal and there is no significant difference in the values.
