I have S&W 6906 and 6904. The 6904 has an import marking on the barrel. Is the 6904 and 5906 basically the same gun? Thanks?

I think you got a typo in your text. You ask if the 6904 and 5906 are the same gun. They ain't. One's a lot bigger (the 5906).

But the 6904 and 6906 are essentially the same gun, only one is in stainless and the other is "blued." (It ain't really blue, but it ain't "silver.")

Both have 3 and 1/2" barrel, weigh about the same, have Al alloy frames but the sights are different as are the slides -- the 6906 has stainless slide and 6904 has carbon steel.

Other than that, pretty much the same gun.

Mine 6906 ain't -- it's a bit of a frankengun: started out as 6906 with damaged sights; I replace the slide with a 3904 slide which worked fine, but I was now down a 3904; then a member here sold me a 3913 slide which fit perfectly so that's now riding on the 6906 frame and it all works just fine but it won't win any "best looking in show" awards. But for a carry gun looks ain't what it's about. Here's a pic of the original 6906, the 6906/3904 and the 3914 slide.

No, the 6906 and 5906 are different, the 5906 being a full size model, the 6906 is a compact model. The 6906 is a third generation model, it was derived from the original 669, which was a second generation model, original dubbed the "mini-gun" when it came out in ~`983.
The 5906 is third generation full size model, it's predecessor was the M659.
Magazine capacity of the full size models is 15 rounds, while the "mini" models will hold a max of 12 with the original magazines.

and 59xx magazines fit and work in 69xx pistols, but will hang down a bit further, because of their extra length.

Plus 2 adapters fix that issue. Although not as trim/compact as the correct mags the 15 rnd ones work great.

They may still be available here in the classifieds and are easy to find elsewhere. At least for now.

6904= blued carbon steel slide, black anodized aluminum receiver.
6906= stainless steel slide, silver-gray anodized aluminum receiver.
Both have 3 1/2 inch barrels and utilize 12 round magazines, although the longer 59/x59/59xx magazines can also be used.
