I've got one and have about 400 rounds through it since I bought it. Feeds everything (but I shoot mostly FMJ and Hydra Shoks). I paid $305 for mine last fall...and I figure any S&W pistol around $300 is a fair price if not a bargain.

It's labeled as an "economy" model, but all it differs from the 3913 is a "plastic" sight (ala a Glock) and no left side ambi safety, plus some other stuff that doesn't matter.

If the price was right...I'd buy it without a second thought.

Be aware that both the (carbon steel) slide and (alloy) frame can be easily touched up. Much easier than bead blasting a stainless model.

A 908 has been one of my regular carry weapons for years.

Use the plastic sights as an excuse to put Trijicon night sights on it.

Yes. there is a 908S model which is stainless.

I got one last year, it's a nice CC pistol, and fits right it with the other SS 3rd gens on the shelf.

In "fair" condition, I would pay no more than $230.

The market is flush with affordable used 9mm pistols.

The 908 is nothing more than that.

A 908 in "fair" condition is desirable only to a dedicated enthusiast once the price passes $250.

Gosh W.E.G. I would love to be in the area of the country you are in where I could purchase a nice used S&W 908 for $230 !!! Not Here!!

He said "fair" condition.

Not nice.

My definition of "fair" is: all parts present, but with obvious wear and/or damage

No one would argue the 908 is plentiful in supply. I don't see how you walk out with one for anything less than $300 in any condition. I would probably be happy to spend $425+ on one LNIB.

I actually picked up a "fair" condition 908 just recently as a little project, with cerakote and a trigger job happening this week.

WEG....please, tell me what VA stores have S&W 9mm's for $230. I'll call them in a heartbeat, honest wear is no barrier if they shoot well. Even with shipping, tax, and the FFL fee that would make them very competitive (or a real bargain) here in WA state or on Gunbroken. I'm looking for a CS 9, Tanfoglio TZ 75 and a Smith 5924. (I steered a couple of folks here looking for a 5906 to a local Seattle store who had them at a very good price, he sold 'em out.)

My experience is that it's hit or miss with 3rd Gen's at various gun shops. I found a like-new 908 for $350. I traded it at the same shop for a really nice 39-2, mostly because the 908 was a back-up to my 3913, and that 39 was calling to me.

Fast forward 1 year, same shop, and there's a 3914LS with 4 mags that I walked out with for $299! Slightly more wear than the 908 had, but still, a more highly-regarded pistol for less money (with more mags). It's all about being in the right place at the right time, which doesn't happen nearly enough for me.

What I consider the major weakness with 908's is at least some came with a plastic magazine catch and the retainer is a push on friction fit. A plastic catch interfacing with a metal mag is generally not a good idea. I saw one that wore just enough to drop some mags down and not feed. Good news is that at some point the catch was replaced with a metal part and you used to be able to buy replacements. The retainer is still plastic but works OK. Bottom line is for me I can see it as a $230 gun if it has a plastic catch or you can't still get the repair parts. S&W is going to screw a lot of folks over cutting off 3rd Gen parts support, and a lot of the wear parts are cheap little stamped metal things that they could make for pennies.

FWIW, my 908, purchased new in 1999, has a metal magazine latch with the plastic button. I have never had any issues with it. If you need to remove the catch, the plastic button does need to be pried off. A new button is recommended for reinstallation. I recently purchased two new buttons, a plastic guide rod, stock recoil spring, and sideplate as 'just in case' spares.

Depending on condition, I'd say that anything between $300-$400 seems to be the going price.

I don't see the price of these guns going up or down at all, but I can see them, and their more finished 39xx brothers becoming harder and harder to find.

If you are in the market for a compact, single stack, 9mm, I suggest you pay the asking price as long as it is relatively reasonable. Forget what the gun "sold for back in the day". This is the Obama economy, and it's worth what it's worth, simple as that. I do like to haggle a bit myself, and always feel like I get a "deal" if I can at minimum, get the dealer to roll the taxes into the shelf price. (I.e. Make a gun listed at $399.99 6% less if there is a 6% sales tax, so I walk out paying exactly $399.99).

Good luck. Nits a neat gun.
