S&W 940

I just purchased a ANIB S&W 940, no dash. I was wondering about the dot above the model number on the frame. Can someone shed some light regarding the dot? Somewhere I've read in these forums about a dot above the model, but I've been unable to find the information.

Also, the grips are the Uncle Mikes banana type that cover the serial. Are these the proper grips?

Congratulations on a fine revolver. Many of us here own them. Or in my case, two of them

I have my cylinders opened up to 9x23 but I only shoot 38Supers on a regular basis. It makes the revolver very versatile. Plus I have several other firearms that have been converted for 9x23.

I think you are remembering the double dots under the de-cocker on the 1076s after they were recalled.

I remember about the dots on the frame mounted decocker, but for some reason I was thinking there was a post about it on the 940's also. Further looking around, I believe the grips on mine are orginal. The box has all the paperwork, including the warranty card, ten clips in a plastic bag, but the cleaning kit was missing.

My 940 is my back-up gun every day at work. Great little J frames.

I have to say my 940 3" is about my favorite J frame. I hope someday to add a snubby 940 to it.

I have a 940 no dash but there are not dots and mine came with smooth wood grips.

I have been looking for a 3" 940 for some time but the only ones I have seen are priced above my means. The grips look nice on yours.

Found one myself about 2 years ago in a LGS, I'm not sure if the guy didn't know what he had or if he wasn't willing to price to match auction sights as he was only asking $475 for it. Needless to say I picked it right up! The little Hogues were the grips that came on mine which have been replaced with a slightly larger set of rubbers that make it more comfortable to shoot and it is my every day carry when I'm home. Unfortunately I couldn't tell you if mine has the dot on it or not as I'm not home right now.

My first 640 (marked TESTED +P+) came with smooth wood grips also. I have searched the internet over and found many that were for sale with the UM's banana grips. I do like the 640-1's rubber boot grips, but the bananas just don't seem right for me.

I bought this on a local internet auction for $460. Don't think I got hurt except the cleaning tools were missing. I have a collection of Centennial models (total of nine with the 940). Now I'm on the hunt for an original 42. However, after seeing the 3" model 940.......may have to start looking for one of them also.

Would love to buy the one that's for sale on the site, but $3000.00+ is out of my league!

This got me wondering about the dot, so I checked mine and it does have the dot above the MOD 940. It is a great J-frame.

I just picked one up a few weeks ago, couldn't walk away for the price. I think the moonlips might be more hassle than I'd like to deal with though, so I've got it up for trade now. I wouldn't mind holding onto it, as I love the Centennial design and I suppose pocket carry of a reload wouldnt be that bad with one of those DelFatti moonclip pocket carriers. Decisions decisions FWIW, this 940-1 doesn't have any dots near the model number.

Buy/Sell/Trade...it's a sickness!

The 940 also came as a .356TSW(9x21.5) in 1994 (IPSC) known as the Pocket Rocket. Tough to find....

Mean little *** that packs a whallop on both ends.
Wouldn't know what to do without it.

Checked a -1: No dot. Easy to reference because it was in my pocket! Just remove from holster and unload.

Both of the 940 "No Dash"s that I had had that dot & I assumed it was from a rockwell hardness test on the frame?
All the 940s I ever saw came with Uncle Mike's grips but have seen both the compact & three finger types?
Now to get up out of the gutter & get back on my feet & be able to buy a couple more, Just have to wait till we get a real President first I guess..

It has a Buy It Now price of $2000..
Nice looking gun..
If I ever hit the Lottery I'd pick it up from him at the next Show they're at in my area & then have Craig Spegel make me a special set of stocks for it.
And Shoot it.. Oh Yeah!! That's what there for..
