I recently bought this 952-2:

As you can see, it has an ambi safety. The problem is that someone dropped the slide while the safety was depressed and it gouged out the top of the wood grip.

I found a forum vendor who makes 52 grips, but not 952 grips. He thinks that they should be interchangeable but asked me to confirm on the forum. Does the 52 have the same grip size as the 952?

Something doesn't seem right here. Did that gun come from the factory with an ambidextrous safety? If so, wouldn't the safety hit the grip if the safety was down and the slide was closed?

Hmmm, very interesting. I have five 952s and none have an ambi safety. Neither does my 52. The gouge isn't there because the slide was dropped but because the safety shouldn't even be there.

Ambi safety Smiths usually have a relief cut on the right panel similar to the one cut into the left panel,
If the grips are gouged already I would make a relief cut with a dremel , file or grinder and finish it with true oil etc.

Yes, that would work but I'd still like to know where the heck that safety came from. Was the OP aware that it did not come from the factory that way?

Possibly a left-handed prior owner made the switch?

I had no idea that it did not come that way. Another gun collector recommended it to me and I bought it sight unseen.

Here is the description of the item from the seller:

"We have been told by the distributor, and have confirmed with S+W that this weapon may have been a 'Show Gun' or 'Salesman's Sample' and therefor has been marked with a 'U' Designation. It is NOT pre-owned. According to the distributor, it was received in a large lot of similar weapons direct from S+W. The distributor states the weapon is unfired, beyond the normal test firing at the factory. The weapon appears as New."

Verrrrry Interesting! Congrats on a unique find.

KN-Nill makes grips for the 952 and they might also custom a set for amb safety. I love all my Nill grips.
