S&W 986--opinion??

I bought one new when they came out. It's a great shooter.

The only thing is that it needs moonclips, as it cannot be fired without them. The 9mm cartridges sit too deep in the cylinder and the firing pin cannot reach the primer without the moonclips.

Having to use moonclips isn't that big of a deal to me, but some people don't like not having the option to shoot it without them.

I debated between the 986 and 929. I ended up with the 929. I figured if I'm getting a large 9mm for a range toy I might as well get the 8 shot 6.5" barrel length. I've shot a couple thousand rounds through mine and like it a lot.

I have a 986. It's a cool gun and works great. For me, the problem is that it doesn't work well for any kind of matches. For 6 shooter classes, you can only shoot 6 shooters. For 8 shooter classes, you're at a disadvantage with a 7 shot. For plinking and casual target shooting, it's a fine gun.
