I've got two S&W 629's with 6" -supposedly- barrels. I measured them from forcing cone to muzzles. 5 3/4" on one, 5 7/8" on the othere. I assumed they would be much closer to the 6". Any thooughts?

S&W's revolver barrels are very often just "approximately" what they are labeled as to length.

Measure from the cylinder face to the crown of the barrel. A 6" barrel should measure between 5 3/4 - 6" with 5 7/8" probably being the most common.

They're typically within 1/8th or so, since there is some degree of fitting involved (or used to be) to get them to line up on the frame perfectly vertical.

I always believed that was one reason why 8 3/8, 1 7/8, etc., show up as standard cataloged lengths. Namely 1/8th was as tight as they could hold the tolerances.

Chuck-

S&W used 8 3/4" for the length of their long barrels originally, but changed to 8 3/8" to comply with NRA bullseye rules which set the maximum distance between sights.
