Nice Gun, More than likely it came in a wood presentation box, but it also could have come in a cardboard box with the wood box with it as a add on. A gun like that deserves the original wood box. The 6.5 is one of the harder ones to find compared to the 6, there is no better place to find one but here in the classifides. Good Luck

We have a member here on the forum that goes by the name of "jcelect" that is the master of those presentation cases. I had the same situation you have with my own 6-1/2" 29-2, I was able to buy a box from a friend here on the forum without any liners, and jcelect did the rest. See the results below:

Annihilator- nice gun. Hey are you sure that it's a 6 1/2"? Looks like a 6" Also when I look at the gun pictured below yours, I can see a difference. It doesn't make any difference to me, it's just that it doesn't look like a 6.5"

These original wooden display boxes show up on Ebay quite often, however be prepared to pay $150-$200 for a minty one.

Your 29-2 appears to have a 6-inch barrel. Assuming this is correct, the correct maghogany case for your revolver is the one with the gun facing to the right with the accessories contained in a compartment below the gun. You will most likely have to have the case relined as the lining in these cases deteriorated rapidly and is rarely found in good shape.

Question to Annihilator or jcelect.
What exactly does jcelect do to the S&W boxes? I just purchased a 1973 Mod. 29-2, 6-1/2" with wood box. The gun is in near new condition but the Box liner is toast. The bottom has only the styrafoam block (blue liner is gone). The top only has a 1" thick piece of yellow foam. I've owned several S&W's but this is the first w/ wood box. Is there supposed to be a foam insert in the top also? Does jcelect refirb these or make them new from scratch? If so I may be interested.

The Styrofoam bottom and yellow foam rubber top inserts are correct for your 1973 Model 29-2. Each was covered with a synthetic blue material that literally fell apart after a few years and these inserts almost always require recovering.

I believe jcelect recovers the Styrofoam bottom with a blue flocking of some type and the top is covered with blue cloth (I may be in error on covering used on the top). He does an excellent job and your case will look virtually new after he is done with it.

jcelect did an outstanding job of re-finishing two cases for me, and I highly recommend him. In fact, his two pictures look like the ones he did for me. The one with the gun facing left came from the factory with a 29-2 in it, and the other with the gun facing right was an aftermarket item which I purchased out of Shotgun News back in the early 80's.
