I have an old S&W/Eastfield 916 pump shotgun, 12 gauge 3 inch chamber. I picked it up awhile back, for not very much. I haven't shot it yet, and I want to sometime just to make certain it's ok.
The barrel has been shortened by Bubba to 20 inches (still legal length), no front sight or bead.
I seem to read a lot online that this shotgun is "****", but I'm mainly trying to determine if it's safe (I read a couple of threads titled "it blew up in my hands", but everything is vague about what happened). Anytime I explore those negative threads, it mostly turns out to be a "buy this other gun, my favorite" instead.
What are the weak points, what do I need to look for and at, in order to be sure I am not going to have it blow up like a stick of dynamite in my hands? Thanks in advance.
