Well, I'm lying in my rehab bed after my second total hip replacement in two months and I have a request.

I was Smith & Wesson's Master Engraver for roughly 23 years from 1976 to 1999 and I'm no stranger to many of you, some of you may have my work in your collections.

That's where my question is, I'm looking for pictures of engraving I have done but never got a picture of. I'm willing to pay for a photo quality copy or maybe I could trade a letter of authenticity of the work I did. I have forgotten many and a picture would jog my mind.

Anyway I'm trying to build an archive of pictures and my original artwork for a future project.

Can't help with any work you have done sir but i want
to wish you a quick healing and good luck.
Thanks for your fine work in the past for S&W.

Chuck

First off sir, Welcome to the Forum! This group is further distinguished by your membership. I also am not fortunate enough to own an engraved gun let alone a factory job, but I have long admired them (I have a well used Model 57 that is an excellent candidate for engraving and restoration, now to save up the several thousand to have the work done). My best wishes for a speedy recovery, and I am confident that several of our members will be able to help out. Have you cruised through the Albums yet? No doubt some of your work resides there....

I to am a member of the " I don't have any engraved guns...yet" club, but maybe one day. I also bid you welcome to the Forum and I wish you a speedy, complete recovery.

STICKY?

bump*

surely someone can help this gentleman out. Can we get a sticky on this?

OK, I will ask the dumb question..... How would I know if the engraving I have was done by you? Would it be signed "Chisels" somewhere on it? For the record, I don't have any of yours or anyones else's, for that matter, engraving work. Just wondering how one would identify the engraver if they didnt commission the work originally.

I would suggest that any Forum members who have Chisels' work in their respective possessions forward him photos/images without asking for anything in return or trade. It would be a small gift to a Master Engraver whose time and skill brought magnificence to your revolver, as well as an extension of the generosity and good will that resonates throughout this Forum.

I have a factory engraved 39-2, s/n S530xxx. Would that have been made in the time period?

jag312, should that S be an A? If so then your gun would be from 1978 - 79 and in the correct period.

Yes, it is an A. A and S are next to each other on the keyboard, and I must have hit the wrong key. I'll start doing some photography.

If either of these are your work I'll be happy to try to get you better pictures.

Shame the factory itself did not keep,a full archive of a very special part of firearm tradition. Were you at the factory location, or, as I have often heard, one of the staff engravers working off site ?....Hope you luck in your recovery.
