As 15,340 of this model were manufactured 1886 to 1913, your serial number 45xx would be 45xx and not 45xxx, as serial numbers did not exceed total production.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! S&W began producing the .44-40 Frontier in 1886 and all of the frames were made before 1899. Shipping was inconsistent and it could have sat in inventory for years before it left the factory. I suspect your gun was made in the first 2-3 years of production but the only way to know for sure when it shipped is to get an historian's letter of authenticity.

Welcome to the Forum ! New Model 3 Frontier 's in caliber .44-40 , serial numbers 4500 to 4599 were made from April 6, 1889 to April 11, 1889. You can order a factory historial letter thru the link above to see when & where the gun was shipped. I have found that very often this model in the .44-40 caliber did not ship for sometimes 1/2 doz.yrs, or so, after it was made and appeared to be slow seller, probably beause the public favored the more accurate .44 Russian calibers over the .44-40, which is a handful to get any accuracy in this model DA.
