I can't find it either. It is ADFxxxx ,(it is a very low digit suffix) and S&W said they have no record of it. I broke the hammer stud and if it's not in Kufenhausen's book it's definitely out of my wheel house.
I have owned it since 92 and was with my friend when he bought it in 83 right after they became available. After sending S&W a picture of the serial numbers inside the yoke and the grip frame the said send it. Without response about how the "have no record" of it.
This and the 5 month turn around gives me some second thoughts on sending it to them. We have a very good gunsmith here but something this precise has me rethinking things.

Pardon my ignorance, What’s a “hammer stud”?

The pin inthe frame that the hammer pivots on. On the 629-1 it need pressed out and a new one pressed in. Then a bit of excess will probably stick out the non sideplate side, need finished flush to match rest of frame

Numerich has them for about $4

I believe they asked for the serial number to ensure it was a model-stamped gun, and therefore parts are still available. No clue as to how the serial number isn't in their system - probably a database glitch or omission from 42 year ago.

Agree there are qualified non-factory gunsmiths that could fix it, and a lot sooner than the factory.

This happens sometimes. If you were to request a "Factory letter" it would report the SN as "Open on the books". Not common, but not un-heard of.
