I found a pair of handcuffs at a local flea market this weekend. I'm trying to figure out if I paid too much, or if they're one of those cool "antique roadshow" type finds and actually worth something. There is a number stamped on them #17197. I was wondering if someone could help me figure out if they're worth anything or if I got bamboozled paying $45 for them.

Thanks

The number, unlike gun serial numbers, doesn't tell us anything. The best way to identify what you have would be if you could post a photo of the cuffs. There were a lot of different S&W cuff models and variations of models over the years, some fairly collectible/valuable.

There were a Kazillion of them made. Yours are worth whatever somebody will pay for them. You paid a little more than "new" price. Keys are universal unless they're stamped "Detroit Police". The other leading brand is Hiatt. S&W cuffs used by the U.S. Marshals have a barrel key that resembles a vending machine key. Yes, they're collectible by some.

Post some good clear photos of the cuffs and the key, showing all markings, with the cuffs open and closed. We can give you a much better answer. Did they come in a S&W box? If so, photo all sides of the box, also. Value depends on condition, markings and and model type, and can range from $20 to over $500 a pair. Ed.
