I've always liked using the Lyman 358311 158-160 gr cast RNL over 11.0 grs for 2400 in 38 Spl cases as a 38-44 duplication load. However, I've only used them in my heavy frame 357 Magnums (ie Ruger Blackhawk).

I recently purchased a 1953 vintage S&W Heavy Duty 5 inch. I have been using a generic 38 Spl +P 158 gr SWC at 925-930 fps (chronographed) load which I developed. I would like to use a round more in line with the 38 Special high velocity rounds of the period…

…would you standardized a round as powerful as my 38-44 duplicate (11.0 grs 2400/Lyman 358311) for a S&W Heavy Duty or is it too much of a round for the vintage firearm?

do it. That load matches factory 38/44 loads from years past. The HD/OD are still N- frames after all. I envy you the purchase!

I have two heavy duty's that I shoot that load in, except I load the SWC Lyman of the same weight. I have seen HD's that we're reamed out to shoot 357 loads, which are several more grains than the 11 grain level. So the load you are proposing will work just fine.

I've had an Outdoorsman for many years but have never gotten around to developing heavy loads for it. I shoot the same cast loads in it as I shoot in all my my .38s - 3.5 grs. Bullseye and the H&G #51 160 gr. SWC.

For heavier loads I use .357 revolvers, with what are really non-magnum .357 loads. I use the #51 and 12 grs. #2400 in .357 brass. Accurate, non-punishing, and about 1150 fps or so.

1150 fps in 357 Mag is what I also prefer in my 4 5/8 Ruger Blackhawk…adequate power, accurate without a big blast!

10 grs of 2400 with a lead 158 gr bullet in a J frame steel snub nose revolver
is a full +P loading in the test that I did many years ago that did 860fps or more.

Make sure your revolver is ok with +P loads and the powders used.
