My next rifle needs to be a light varmint rifle. I'm thinking in .223 because I have the gear to load it.

I checked the S&W site and it only lists the I-Bolt as .270 and 06 both long actions. So where is the short action .308 and .233 version???

they are listed as 25-06 which would be great for ya if you want to go that route. if you look closely the 30-06 and 270 are the "also available"
Product: i-Bolt Rifle - Black

oh my bad realized what you was looking for now, i dont think they offer a short action in 223 or 308, at least its nowhere to be found in any of my catalogs.

They don't come in short actions. Only the long ones, and only a few of those. I've always thought that was why they didn't sell very well. Lack of diversity in caliber choice.

I figured that S&W was discontinuing the i-Bolt rifle. My local guy showed me an ad for the rifles at cheap, very cheap wholesale in closeout.

I think they were just trying to get into a crowded market. They should have learned from the last bolt rifles and shotguns.

Nothing wrong with their long guns, just too much competition.

I bought one in 30-06 from CDNN for $339 and $9.95 shipping. It is a great rifle! Wish I could buy more. For a non heavy barrel it is incredibly accurate, after using break in ammo with a Weaver K6 scope I got 1.25" groups at 100 yards . Black Hills ammo shrunk that to just under an inch. However if I shoot more than 6 rounds in rapid succession it will string the rounds vertically to about 2" as the barrel heats up. I will do a little more testing in rapid fire to see how bad it can get, but for a hunting rifle this is outstanding accuracy. I also want to see how it will handle the heavy 30-06 bullets(180gr&up). It is the best bolt throw since the Browning A bolt, very short upward movement to disengage. I see a better scope in my future.

Do you think when they bought Thompson Center they are using their barrels on these rifles?

hmm, im in the market for a new hunting rifle, wonder what kind of deal i could get on one of these now.

The i-bolt is a wonderful hunting tool, the one that I take with me while the other "high end" rifles remain home in the safe. I have one in .30-06 and I'm delighted in every way. If there's 1/8 of an inch difference at 100 yards with my Kimber ($$$), that would be a lot. The Kimber, however, is eye candy; the S&W is that homely woman who knows how to cook, and brings you beer while you watch TV.

It seems to me that the Thompson Center Venture is the new i-bolt, except that it features a detachable 3-round magazine. One can check it out through the S&W website.
