What you are seeing in discount knife outlets are usually "over runs" by Taylor Cutlery, made mostly in China in the last 20 yrs. When Taylor was the licensee, they would supply S&W marketing with dozens of knives and marketing might select 1/2 doz. for inclusion in the S&W factory accessory/knife catalog. The knives not selected by the factory were then dumped on the secondary markets and greatly discounted prices vs. what S&W charged for the knives featured in their catalog. These over run knives all have the S&W name & logo on them, but are not factory authorized issues. About 15 yrs. ago, or so, a fellow S&W collector I know, happened to meet the CEO of Taylor at the Shot Show and he made a deal to receive a shipment of each new issue of S&W knives. Soon UPS trucks were delivering large boxes filled with knives. After several hundred arrived, my friend realized he must be getting all the knives not selected by S&W for their factory authorized knife catalog, and therefore they were not recognized by collectors as real S&W knives!
