Hello I have recently bought a short letter typed and signed by W.F. Roper. It is on a Smith & Wesson letterhead and has S&W insignia embossed on the papaer. Its dated April 25 1928. He giving some shooting advice to a guy in Cleveland OH. Has anyone seen anything like this sell. are they common to find?

Not common but they are out there. I have several. Roper worked for the company so therefore there are letters out there over his signature. You can sometimes find ones by one of the Wessons or Carl Hellstrrom as well

Pen Pals?

I happen to have a couple of letters from Roper, also to a guy in Cleveland. Roper mentions "...when we first began corresponding with you." Are yours to a fellow named John Bittens?

Thats the same guy, John Bittens. he must have bugged the hell out of Mr Roper. Thats the same paper and everything. How strange is that.

Wonder how many other deadheads poor Mr. Roper had to spend his days answering? Hard to believe there was ever a time when an important company official would perform that kind of personal service.

I wasn't around at that time, but rather suspect that civility existed at a different level, when people communicated at a different level. Now everyone that aspires to be competitive has an agent, PR person and a lawyer that handles correspondence because we are so liability conscious. Sad isn't it Wonder what would happen today if management took that kind of interest in the end user. I had a problem with a computer one time and tried to get it resolved over the phone. After weeks of trying to get a resolution, I called for someone in management. After dealing with a very aggressive customer service person who failed to dissuade me from speaking to someone in management, came back to the phone the last of 5 times he put me on hold to tell me "we don't have management that comes to the phone" . I like Roper's style. Never hurts to offer assistance to someone who needs it. Knowledge is something that you can give away and never miss it.

Interesting insight into the inner workings of a great company.

Thread resurrection.
I was going through some long misplaced S&W documents and rediscovered this letter from Mr. Roper from 1925, typed on the back page of a 22/32 fold out advertisement. It touts a new world record for any revolver along with pics of the target as well as the gun.
As mentioned above, it would be quite unusual for an important company official to dictate a letter to a Joe Blow nowadays, although somewhere I do have a letter to me from Mr. Ruger after I wrote and asked when the new X-GI rifle would be available. SCAN0025.JPG

Well don't keep us in suspense - when is it coming out??? A Mini-14 in .308 sounds like a winner! ;)

Pretty sure they had to settle for the mini-30 as their action couldn't handle the .308. I saw a couple of prototypes sell on GB years ago.

I shot an XGI back in the 1980s. The action was bigger than the Mini 14. It balanced well and used 20 round M14 magazines. I was told that it wouldn't function well with all .308 Winchester/7.62x51 rounds and was shelved.
