I have an early model 617- 4 inch. it has a round barrel with no lug. it is in mint condition with box and papers. does any body know anything about this gun? I was thinking of selling it but I have no idea what to ask for it. I bought it new a long time ago.

If I am reading the Standard Catalog of S&W correctly, the no lug version was a limited production for Ashland Shooting Supplies made in 1991. Another notation leads me to believe that 200 were made in 4 inch. Although the Ashland order looks like square butt not round butt. I don't know on that one, sorry.

It looks like a no lug version for a 6 inch was made also, 116 units at minimum. Perhaps more since there are a couple of notations for a 6 inch no lug version.

I do know that is a very desirable gun. At least one other member has posted photos of that gun in their possession. I am not a collector so I can't speak from that angle but if you post photos folks will love that.

And a photo of the box label may bring even more info. I am steadily amazed at what folks around here know when they have the info.

If it looks like this, it's worth a lot more than you paid for it! I know others on here will pay you what it's worth.

I have a plain vanilla 617 that works just fine... BUT the one you have is what they are ALL supposed to look like!! ;)

The 617 does not need the full under lug. Period.

With the box and everything you've got a collector's gold mine. It's the Holy Grail of the Model 617 K-22 Masterpiece Stainless. At auction on Gun Broker it will go for something north of $2,000. There was one at a gunshow once with a $7,000+ price tag on it.
