Just bought a 98%+ S&W M1917 # 6929. It has the hammer with the grooves like the RM and the very early stocks, which should be pencil numbered? but aren't. Faded away?
GHS inspected. I don't usually collect US Property guns, but I could not pass this one up. Any thoughts from the experts? Big Larry

A 98% 1917 with that low a SN? Sounds almost too good to be true, please post pictures. As to the pencilled SN, the pencil marking does fade and often can't be seen without using bright light and holding the grip at an angle. I've sometimes been able to make them out in sunlight and sometimes with a bright flashlight and magnifying glass. Sometimes you can see that there had been numbers but they are no longer legible, or not all of them are. Good luck and we are EAGER to see pictures.

A very nice early 1917 is a gem and a joy forever.
Now you need to get a nice holster, a box of ammo, etc.
Please post some pictures when you have the opportunity.

I have a sealed box of WW1 45ACP ammo, but this treasure will never see the inside of a holster.
As for pics, I have a friend coming over next Wednesday to show me how to do it.
It really is a nice one. My BIL had a drippy mint 3 digit M1917 and unfortunately passed away with it. Thanks all. Big Larry
